Teenagers in America attend Highschool.
The first year, the kids are age 14-15, and that is called the freshman year
the second year, ages 15-16, sophomore
third, ages 16-17, junior
fourth, ages 17-18, senior
these terms are also used to describe the first thru fourth years of college or university that someone is in.
public school is required for us for 12 years. That means that the highschoolers are in "grade" 9-12. So, to put it differently, someone in their 9th year (or grade) of public school is a freshman. 10th, sophomore, and so on. Hope this helps!

And to continue on that theme, grade 11 / 3 year of college is Junior. grade 12 / 4th year of college is Senior.
In the US and canada, First Grade or Grade 1 represents the traditional first year of school. In the US (and maybe canada), two additional grades were added. Pre-Kindergarten is usually voluntary for 4 year olds and Kindergarten is usually mandatory for 5 year olds and 6 is First grade.
Canada usually refers to the grades as Grade 1, Grade 2, etc. while the US refers to them as First Grade, Second Grade, etc. While this may seem a very anal difference, when you hear it spoken, each side of the border thinks the other is a bit off kilter.
In reality the college designations have little to do with years and more to do with hours completed. I have a friend who spent 12 years attending college. He just never could decide on a major.

Freshman is a term used to describe someone who is in their first year of something and sophomore describest there second year. Most commonly used in school, in high school your first year you are a freshman, and in your second year you are a sophomore. Same goes for college. The two terms are used outside of school too. You might call someone who is a beginner at something a freshman at it.
