So I received a letter in the mail from the courthouse for jury duty, and it was already torn opened. Is the government reading our mail now?

Should I report it?

Well Pat, you never know, the feds might be stupid enough to leave it torn open.

You could put in a complaint or enquiry to the post office and check. Be hard to find out anything though i would think.

It might have just got mangled in the machine that sort the mail automatically, or the glue might be crappy quality on the envelope.

Sometimes these things happen. sometimes people read your mail.

good luck with this. It is rude to think someone would open your personal mail though.

What would the government get out of snooping on a jury duty summons? Even if they did want to know I am sure they have much easer ways of finding out about things like this (like contacting the courthouse). If it was really the government, I would think they would be more careful then to leave the letter torn open.

I would not worry, probably just a normal mail problem. If you are really worried or find more mail in a similar condition, call the post office.

You should not get paranoid. It may have been delivered to the wrong address and the person who received it just assumed all mail was for them, without looking and opened it; then come to realize it was not theirs. I've done that and have given it back to the postman and told him of the mistake to deliver it to the right address. Also I had letters that looked like they had been crumbled in the trash for a few days. I took it back to the post office and questioned them. They said that when they go through the mechanical sorter, they sometimes get caught. I thought for sure someone had read it, but when I opened it, it was just another ad without a return address.

get used to it.
its been happening alot lately, along with not receiving mail from the other side of the border. Not sure if they started letting mail from Canada through again or not.

if you complain to the post office, it will stop immediately, but there will be no people caught for doing it, and no one disciplined.
