What "I am, I said," is correct. I've had a cotton hammock that I've hung out for 10 years. (I do bring it in during the winter months.) It has not rotted at all. If it could not dry out between rains, it would indeed mildew, but that is not usually the case unless you were to live in a jungle. It can get a bit grimy after a season outside, but you can wash it in a mild soap and water solution and it cleans right up. The wooden stretcher, however, will eventually rot if you don't put varnish on it every year or so.

Yes!! Rain will cause a cotton hammock to mold and turn black. Eventually, it will rot and fall apart. I have had a hammock for ten years now and it looks like new. Of course, I only hang it up when I want to use it and I never, ever let it get wet.

No, cotton grew up in a field getting rained on, on a regular basis.
Just as any organic, absorbent material, cotton will mold and degrade if it stays wet constantly.
As long as your hammock dries out between rains, it will be fine. If mold grows, keep it under control with an occasional washing including household bleach

Yes (unless you bought a water treated one, will say on packaging).Another thing to keep in mind is the wood on the hammock will mold if not dried carefully, and then little bugs swarm. In short your hammock getaway becomes a swamp.

I would certainly get it out of the weather and dry it really well (mildew rots) but slowly since it is cotton and will shrink

Rain and sun willl damage it. But if you can't take it indoors when it's not in use then you will just have to buy a new one once it is rotted.
