I work the 2-10pm shift and I am relieved at 10pm by a black lady. I am white. I've been on this new job for about a month. She has never been on time to relieve me. There is this 8 minute rule that goes like this..if someone is late but gets there at 10:07 you don't get overtime until it hits the 8 and the person still gets their 7 minutes. After the 8 minutes past 00, 15, 30, 45 you get .25 for every increment. Anyhow she rolls in 5, 6, 7 minutes late everynight. She gave me attitude one night when I wrote down I left at 10:08. Her supervisor relieved me Thursday night an hour late and I told him that I not only work fulltime, I'm a fulltime student and would appreciate if his staff would relieve me on time. Black lady was 5 minutes early tonight. I signed out at 9:55. She had the nerve to say, "Where are you going"? I told her I signed out at 9:55 and walked out before giving her a chance to say something. Is this racism or just jerky?

are you asking if you are a racist, the new white girl at work telling on the black lady that's been working there longer for being 6 minutes late? I would say yes. You are racist. if you werent racist then this question would have been about a coworker lady, not a "black lady". Get over yourself. you are the new kid on the block. What makes you so special that 5 minutes is worth trying to get somebody fired over?

How can you write her time? That is her supervisors job.
You should have a timeclock. That way there is no doubt about the time you check in or check out.

I totally understand your predicament. I was held back one day at a job and missed a class. I quit. They often need people to work overtime. I told them I couldn't, so I had to make a choice. It was either a job or school. So I quit. I didn't quit out on bad terms.

It was funny. I ended up working for a temporary job service. General labor. I worked all over the place for all kinds of different people. The jobs were only temporary and didn't last long.
Anyhow, I ended up getting a job where I was paid more for doing less than my past employer and I got a temporary job right across the street from my past employer. My previous boss drove up one day and called me a "Benedict Arnold". We laughed.

If a white person did the exact same thing would you consider the person being a racist or just a inconsiderate and unconcerned worker? Bad employees come in all colors and so does bad attitudes. I've work with white people who were punctual and others that were chronically late. I've worked with black people who were punctual and others who were chronically late. The prejudice is that all black people are lazy, but I see and know hard working black people that take pride in their job and manage to be on time everyday. This particular woman sounds like she's irresponsible. White, black, green or yellow she's annoying because she's late. You're responding to her in a negative way because you're tired and want to leave on time. It's not racist it's just human. Have you ever taken the time to explain to her why it is so important for you to leave on time. Do you know why she is not on time clocking in. Does she have to rely or a ride, a baby sitter, etc...these are not legitimate excuses to be late, but they are reasons. If you open the lines of communication you may be able to resolve the conflict. But if you make asinine assumptions based on nothing more than your personal bias then you will be angry with the woman every time you have to wait an extra two seconds.

She knows if she's a racist. If she doesn't know, that's her problem.

Next time, just politely remind her and say "I would appreciate it if you can be on time. I go to school full time and work full time, and every minute counts for me."

Simple, but effective.
