Who is the best guitarist in the world?
-Eddie Van Halen
-Jimi Hendrix
-Steve Vai
i think its steve vai, no one freakin beats him, he could play ever hendrix song when he was 13, and van halen practically invented tapping, but no one can do wat steve vai did with taping, its impossible, hes done 10 fingered tapping before, its like nearly impossible, so i think Steve Vai is da best

Someone once asked this question to Peter Frampton saying many say you are the best guitarist in the world. His response was something to the effect ' No, way I am the best. The best guitarist by far is Phil Keagey.'
Hendrix was a good improvisational player Van Halen has some sweet style, and Steve Vai is very good but would Carlos Santana not also be a good choice on your list? Oscar Lopez is very nice as well, I suppose it depends on style of play. But If i am limited by the 3 you called out, I go Van Halen....Panama.....

Hands down, George Harrison of the Beatles.
He was the first guitarist to play slide guitar in rock n roll, and also created distortion and brought studio production to music, which completely changed how people create music, especially on guitar. Would Jimmi Hendrix have been so good witout his Wah Wah pedal or his distortion?
Van Halen and Vai are tight, but you said best guitar ever...

This is an extremely arbitrary question
there are literally dozens of superb guitarists
that have lived and performed magic for the world
and to pick one would be simply to say the one that YOU would pick out of all of them !! A simple Personal choice-- or preference !!
I saw Hendrix play live twice
I will never forget the "experience" if I live to be two hundred !!
Vai is superb
Clapton is technically the "cleanest" guitarist to have ever lived !
I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn play dozens of times sitting no more than 10 feet from the stage in Austin, Tx on sixth street --- absolutely unbelievable "feel" within his technique !!
Another name for the frey----- John McLaughlin
if you haven't heard this open forum jazz genius you haven't heard guitar jazz at it's purest !!
So, to pick one of these people would be like asking me if I wanted to be cut off from one of the following---- air-- food--or water !!! You'd be the loser to make a choice !!!

Eddie Van Halen is up there, Jimi Hendrix, too. However, my top 3 would be (in no particular order): B.B. King, Carlos Santana and Prince. B.B. King because I love the blues, Santana because you can tell it's him playing, and Prince because he's just damn good.

Jimi Hendrix revolutionized the whole instrument.
If you're looking for some crazy playing though look up Michael Angelo Batio or Yngwie Malmsteen. They're music isn't very good but their shredding will vaporize your face.
