By far, the Core Duo at any speed is going to outperform a P4 3GHz, especially in a laptop. The Pentium M architecture is a highly advanced Pentium III customized for laptops to reduce power consumption, heat, and run faster per MHz.

The Core Duo is basically two Pentium M cores on one chip. Even a single Pentium M would likely beat a 3GHz P4 in most benchmarks. A Core Duo is that much better, especially for Windows Vista. Be sure not to skimp on the graphics processor, which you might want to make a trip over to http://www.tomshardware.com for some reviews to help you make up your mind.

In addition, consider the newer Core 2 Duos from Intel. Unlike the Core Duo, they have been rebuilt almost from the ground up and actually lead the market on both desktops and laptops. They consume even less power as well. Expect to pay another $150-$200 for one over the choices you listed here.

the better deal will be the dell. The P4 you picked has very basic options, and I don't see a price. It has a small HD and lower memory than most laptops mean. A P4 will also require a larger cooling device and would be heavier.

I am not sure what dell you would customize, but the linked one will be easy to tailor to your needs. There is also a 20% off $999 laptops at http://24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html until 2/15 The dell is most likely going to fit your needs and your budget.

Good Luck

Dell for sure. Much better build quality, lower power consumption, make sure to up the dell's graphics from onboard intel though. you've got a better ram limit, and a better processor (the core duo line and core 2 duo line smash the pentium 4 line at almost any speed, esp. the ones you are considering wtih that dell inspiron 9400).

ok this is how i look at it. Dell has never let me down, has GREAT customer service and is generally making great computers. No 1.3GHz is not that big of a deal to me. Also, the Dell(which in my eyes will always be better than any other comp except for like an Alienware)< has a dual processor! this takes your worries away for speed my friend. So my vote is for the Dell!

A Pentium 4 3Ghz laptop is previous technologies even though it is likewise a physically powerful area heater (runs warm). the recent twin cores are super for capability shoppers, in any different case the 2nd center might in simple terms be idle quite some the time. in case you elect appropriate bang for the greenback, evaluate the quickest Intel Yonah (Celeron M450 or center Solo T1400). combine it w/ a minimum of 1Gb RAM and ATI or Nvidia pics. you would be stunned at what it could do. Beats maximum employer computers.
