does listening to dissonant chords damage you ears more than consonant chords since consonant chords are pleasing to the ear?

Hi - I'm an Audiologist.

It is the intensity of sound, and to some degree the duration of exposure, that damages the inner hair cells. Sound does not have to be "extremely" loud to be damaging. Most people do not perceive hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, or dental drills to be "extremely" loud - yet many hairdressers, housekeepers, and dental workers are showing signs of noise-induced hearing loss and the tinnitus that goes with it.

Just because most people prefer hearing consonant harmonies doesn't mean they are less harmful - that is simply a matter of taste; like broccoli vs. Brussels Sprouts.

You want some dark music? Try the Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique. It's not operatic in the sense that there are no singers, but the twisted nature of it all is really something else. Go to wikipedia and read Berlioz's program notes (especially for the last two movements). It's great stuff...it's dark...(my fave example of this is when he has these church bells playing while the brass is trumping out part of the Gregorian Dies Irae than the strings come with this playful sort of melody that, with the rest of it, seems rather twisted...it's intense!)
