i need to know how i can find out what kind of ram for my pc i need to buy i have 256 would like to double

Go to this website http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and download the program. It will tell you what type of ram type you need and what frequency.

Most likely if you have an older computer you have DDR Ram, while newer ones have DDR2. When you buy ram make sure have the right type (DDR or DDR2) or it will not fit into your slot. And make sure you have the same frequency or higher. If you buyer higher frequency ram it will downclock to the frequency of your motherboard.

More RAM is generally considered to be better 1 GB would be the best but doubling to 512 MB wouldn't hurt. As for what kind you need that really depends on the kind of motherboard you have. RAM is varied and buying the right kind can be confusing. There are different speeds, different number of pins and things like that. Check the website of the manufacturer of your motherboard for what kind of RAM is needed for your system.
