We all as human beings are to have good characters.Character in turn depicts the inner sense of a person. You might have provoked some thoughts within you, that is why you say that you are not successful. As per my opinion,a person is said to possess a good character when he possesses the following virtuous qualities.

First of all the person should play down the character"I".This means that we should not be selfish or jealous. One should have the inention to help those who are in need, make others happy by their presence, make others comfortable beacuse of you, solve others problems by being friendly them, playing a major role in team work, realising others hidden talents, encouraging yourself as well as others who have the right capabilities, being honest, holding a stand on our firm decisions, greeting everyone with a charming smile, and moreover not making anyone feel uncomfortable with us.You should always be polite. This does not mean that we should give up our thoughts which infact are correct, but it means that we should see that we never hurt others for ourselves being happy.

Building a good character is not anyway related to money. It's the one that is related to inner sense. And remember

"IF WEALTH IS LOST,NOTHING IS LOST,
IF HEALTH IS LOST,SOMETHING IS LOST,
IF CHARACTER IS LOST,EVERYTHING IS LOST"....

Remember the words of Rabindranath Tagore..

"Where the mind is without fear
....
.....

let my country awake.."

look at yourself and what do you believe in? what are your goals in life pertaining to happiness, where do you see yourself among others?? Your family values?

good character building starts from the inside..right to your core (your heart) how true are you to yourself? Do you enjoy helping others? do you believe the good in others? Only you can define yourself. See what your interests are, pursue those. Pursue in volunteering, you will find a whole lot of yourself in helping others then reading books or asking around. When you volunteer you will see that yes you have many hidden talents that you never knew that existed and you feel satisfied. In this satisfaction, you will find happiness and a sense of peace. Its not hard to have a good character, if you are strong in willing to learn about yourself then there is no one out there who will be able to stop you.

Character comprises of 'attitude, inner strength, will power, self confidence, self dignity and simple but amicable nature.
You must have formed some ideas or parameters, that is why you say that you are not successful. See, character can not be defined in few lines. Your personality and your inner traits form ''you'', that projects what you are.
First of all, read some good autobiographies of influential personalities( Gandhi ji,Lalbahadur Shastri,Lincoln etc),Try to learn and grasp what crisis they all went thru, and how they faced that crisis or problems. Try to understand that 'HOW', that will give you a clear prospective of strength .
Carry your self with dignity, have self respect,be compassionate not meek, have courage to face the facts of life...be honest to yourself first,be kind and have empathy for those who need it.....
Your attitude towards life should be full of right types of consideration, firmness, honesty and child like simplicity. This is very important.
While talking to others, you should be polite but assertive provided you are right, witty, kind, caring and positive. You must exude positivity....its very important.
your inner trait build your character...so improve yourself... character gets strong by itself.
