Since Mauer is not eligible for free agency, if he didn't sign the contract offered to him by the Twins, he would have to sit out the remaining number of years until he is eligible for it. It would be best for all concerned if the Twins gave him a fair offer, or even better still if they signed him to a long term contract that took him past his free agent eligibility. Since the Twins love Mauer and he is from the Twin Cities area, I honestly think he'll sign and then they'll both try to work out a long contract.

As a player with less than 6 years of experience, he would not have been eligible for free agency. If he had not signed the contract, the team and Mauer would have gone to arbitration to determine his salary for '07 - they each submitted proposed salary figures last month and the arbitrator would have had to pick which of the 2 figures was fair.

He has only 3 years of Major League service, so the Twins still "own" him. Had he not signed that contract, they would have gone to an arbitrator who would have decided whether he will get the salaray he submitted or the twins submitted. This would go on until he has 6 years of Major League service, then he would become a free agent, at which time he is free to sign with any team he chooses.

that's only area of the dance between communities and gamers. we've all considered 'cut-off dates' and considered that there is particularly no such ingredient as a cut-off date, that's only manuevering for a more desirable sensible settlement. although, i might want to be stunned to work out Mauer signed to an extension. It would not look like he particularly needs to stay in Minnesota, he enjoys the limelight, the severe-lifestyles, and being a media darling. he's angling for bright light fixtures, and that i does no longer be stunned to work out him finally end up in ny, Boston, Chicago or possibly even l. a.. The Twins might want to be smart to capitalize on his fee and %. up some important skills for him, somewhat of settling for a first round draft %. next 365 days.

he probably could have lobbied for more money. he is obviously the best catcher in baseball and he is still very young and has great talent. if the twins didnt sign him, every other team in the league would have offered him a contract.

He is the best hitting catcher in baseball.

He was under contract for this year so he would have played it out. They renegotiated his contract it wasn't that he didn't have one.
