The etymological root of the word is Italian. 'Graffiti' being the plural of 'graffito' - or "a scribbling". The word most likely came into the lexicon surrounding the excavation of Pompeii (1850's), where they found drawings and phrases preserved on ancient walls.
I realize that probably isn't the 'modern' answer you were looking for, but the Italian language and Pompeii is where the actual word "graffiti" came from.

:) Graffiti never actually STARTED anyplace- unless you count the cave walls where cavemen decided to interior design their walls to impress their cavegirls. People have ALWAYS had the habit of leaving their imprint on things- whether its been caves, or trees, or rocks or whatever. It was never "invented"...-It's just something people have always DONE.

Yes, it comes from the Italian. Graffia - scratching. They were drawings and slogans scratched on buildings.
