I have to tell you that as a hamster breeder, there are no rare species. I am a breeder that took an oath with the Internet Hamster Association of North America not to charge differently for my hamsters depending on their color. Unfortunately, pet stores don't do this at all. They do the exact opposite to the point that people think different colors are different breeds! Syrian hamsters are incorrectly sold as "Teddy Bears", "Dalmations", "Panda Bears", "Calicos", "Honey Bears", etc. I've seen Campbells Russian Dwarf Hamsters being sold as "Blackberry Hamsters" and "Blueberry Hamsters". The ridiculous thing about it all is the prices that go along with these "fancy" names. I've seen some pet stores selling their fancy hamsters for $25! Hamsters are the only species that I know of with this problem. A Labrator Retriever breeder won't have different prices for a black lab than a yellow lab. The funny thing is a hamster breeder will be able to provide you with a pedigree, has selectively bred the animals and will not charge more than $10.
Given your description, you have a patterned agouti animal (agouti is the normal color that you've described as gold and grey). If you have a Syrian, then you probably have a dominant spot ("Dalmation"). If you have a Campbells Russian Dwarf then you either have a Platinum or a Mottled. If you have a Winter White Russian Dwarf, then you may have a Pearl but it most likely a hybrid with a Campbells Russian Dwarf. If you have a Chinese hamster, then you probably have a Dominant Spot.
None of these genes are rare, sorry. I just imported 12 hamsters from the Czech Republic that have a different manifestation of the dominant spot gene. They are the only 12 hamsters like it in the US and I wouldn't even consider them to be rare, nor charge more than $10 for the pups.
If you'd like to e-mail me a photo of your hamster, I'd be more than happy to identify the exact species and pattern for you.

Here is a site that has the different hamster species and if you surf around the site a bit, you will see the different colors and patterns each species has.

They sound like dwarf hamsters, which come in multiple colors. They are very easy to get in all colors. There are also a few other species of hamster that are fairly rare in the pet market still, but none of them cost over $40 (which I do not consider a fortune).

Here is how I see it. The bride and groom chose Peru, knowing full well that not everyone can drop everthing and go to Peru. It is a long trip. And not everyone could afford it. And they knew not everyone would want to spend that kind of money to go somewhere not exactly on everyone's dream destination list. And if they did not know all this, they are rather naive, or not very reponsible, which are two more reasons you should not go. And you are still going to have to come up with food, lodging, local transportation, the wedding costs. A lot of money. If you do not want to go into debt, I would not go. politely decline to be the groom's best man, and be honest: we just can't afford it. PS: does the bride and groom know that Peru is on your destination list? It would be a little rude to decline the wedding, but go there the next year. Almost a slap in the face that says"we did not wnat to go to your wedding, just Peru".

in stripes? there are a few dwarf hamsters. they cost a little more than regular hamsters. they could be pedigreed something or other from a hamster show and have great markings i still doubt they cost much - here are some pics of dwarf hamsters.

It's not true... either he's joking or he's challenging your intelligence... Those are "dwarf" hamsters, and you can find them in the pet store for like 10 bucks...
