OK I have a 1983 model and just came back from a round trip of almost 2000 miles. It isn't an Olds though. I usually travel with a bit of water and some oil just in case, but have only used the oil twice, and only half a cupful at a time.

Make sure you have coolant, engine oil and transmission fluids up to their marks, check the tire pressures including the spare and check the battery acid level and that the fan belts and coolant hoses are OK. If you don't know how to do this get it done by a local mechanic for a few dollars or at a "Full service" service station if such a thing still exists. Or maybe a friend. All that should not take more than say 15 - 25 minutes.

If the car is not overheating, rattling badly or blowing smoke now it will probably get there and back OK.

Take two breaks for coffee or a bite to eat along the way.

You should be able to take it on a trip. Here's a few things you should do before leaving.
Check to see if you need the oil changed, if it has been 6 months or 3-4000 miles, just have the oil changed.
Check all the fluids, the radiator, oil, transmission, brake fluid, and washer fluid.
Check all the tires, and inflate them to the proper pressure.
Get a list of phone numbers for towing companies, or check with your insurance for a tow company, JUST IN CASE.

Other than that, tell somebody where you are going, drive safely and have a good trip.

If your car is in good condition and been serviced regularly then why not. If you don't have it alredy, you should take out AAA membership as added insurance. If you don't feel comfortable doing the trip in your car, t then rent a car or better still fly and then rent when you get there. The air fare would probably be cheaper than the gas anyway.

If you are young, go for it, take the trip. Something to talk about to your children and grand children! Pack a couple of gallons of water and some extra oil just in case and check the belts for deep cracks before you go.

We cant decide that without seeing the car. Take it to a mechanic if you're uncertain and have them inspect it.

I would rent a car. Try to get one with great gas mileage...
