A home security system is probably your best bet. A trained guard dog is a great deterrent, but if someone wants in your house bad enough, they can eliminate the dog. A gun is good, but you really have to know how to use it, and you have to know that your intentions are to kill someone without hesitation. It is harder to kill a person - even one breaking into your home - than you think. Actually, get the home security system and learn to use the gun. Get the dog, too. I have a gun and an attack horse.

I would choose double cylinder deabolts, and sash locks for the windows.
An alarm only helps once someone has gotten into your home in the first place. by then, the intruder can smash and grab, although the alarm SIGN tends to keep most burglars away. False alarms are a major hassle, and monthly fees can pile up.
A dog, like an alarm is more of a deterrent due to it's existence. Dogs are a good deterrent because they are unpredictable, and they do not worry about the legal repercussions of their actions. they are bad because they can be killed, pacified with food, drugged, and even stolen. Also, they may not know the difference between a burglar and the gas man, meter reader, your best friend, etc. Even if the dog does it's job, it requires feeding, grooming, medical attention, and companionship.
For a gun to work, someone must be around to operate it, and must be dangerous looking, or sounding, enough to convince the burglar that it will be used. Most people think they can run around the house with a gun, and shoot whoever they see, but this generally leads to a legal nightmare. In most states, you will be required to hide, or attempt to flee, and can only shoot the burglar if the burglar is clearly a menace to your safety. Burglars know this, and may continue their smash and grab efforts even if they hear the dreaded sound of a shotgun being racked back. Or, they may just shoot you first. Criminals are likely to know as much, if not more about their gun than you know about yours. To be on top of your gun game, you'll need to spend a lot on ammo, and make frequent trips to the shooting range.... however, one thing a criminal is always on the look out for is a clean gun, so if people know you have one at your house, that may actually be the reason a criminal decides to rob you.
Good quality locks on your doors and windows will keep people out in the first place. They can last for decades with little or no maintenance, and if you don't like the hassle of keys, there are keyless entry systems which have no more hassle than an alarm system... and can sometimes even be hooked up to one.
Add some good relationships with your neighbors, so you know who's around when, and you stand a good chance of getting one or two reliable witnesses should a crime occur.
Mark your stuff, take pictures of it, keep reciepts and a list of what's where, and you'll recover the insurance value at least. UV markers are especially good in this situation, because criminals often won't see the ink, so the cops can get plenty of evidence for a rock solid conviction.
That's what I would choose, because I'm cheap like that. Then I'd maybe think about an alarm system... but if I've got neighbors keeping an eye out, I don't need the armed response team, so screw the company, and just get one with a loud bell to wake up your friends. Remeber, no false alarms though!
If my neighbors had dogs, I'd stick a beware of dog sign up on MY fence near their side of the yard too. Lots of my neigbors think the dogs are in my yard anyway.
If I wanted a gun, I'd get it for the fun of putting large holes in small pieces of paper, and I'd stick with a good shotgun or a .45, because those make big holes, and have lots of stopping power, but the ammo doesn't go too far away from where I shoot it, so my neighbors won't get too many holes in their walls.

A home security system. A trained dog could still be shot. And, having a gun could be too handy ....should you get too scared and go trigger happy. You could get into a lot of trouble.
Of course, a factor that needs to be considered is the neighborhood in which you live.
Stay safe!

A home security alarm that sounds like a vicious dog and then shoots the intruder if they come in the house. That is what I would choose!

My answer is from a male's perspective.
Monitored security systems are a waste of money.
Intruder alarms at least give you or, if you are away, your neighbors notice that something is happening.
Dogs are creatures that deserve a life better than watching my house.
If I were a single female, I would get a concealed weapons license after proper training and protect myself.

I would go w/ the security system. A dog if left inside can destroy yer furniture. Outside it will kill yer grass & dig holes in yer yard. If the perpatrater is in your house & the dog is outside, all it can do is bark! With a gun you could kill the wrong person...like yerself! If you & the crook were fighting over it! I have a security system, I wouldn't take anything for it. It is on 24/7!

A dog poops. A gun may end up being used on you. A security alarm makes more sense. :) Good luck! :) Arum

Guns kick ***. Alarms are worthless porfessional theves can be in and out of your house in fifteen minutes much faster then the police could even get dispatched. and this is comming from a cop.

I would choose a security system because you won't have to register for a gun and you won't have to worry about the dog turning against you. also, it is reliable. it is on day and night, it is virtually fool proof!!
