It says cape cod on the listing. Is this correct? I thought cape cods were small squares. Also do you know about what period this house would be from? Thanks

I might add that it's in a neighborhood with pre-civil war and victorian houses.

Also I thought that capes had a chimney protruding from the top center of the house. This chimney seems to be in the wrong location and too ornamental.

That is Cape Cod, the "dormer" rooms on the top usually mean Cape Cod style. I would guess it's from the 50s.

I always thought Cape Cods always had the front door(main entry) in the front of the house with the roof sloping toward the front. One and a half stories. Your house could be a modified Cape Cod, but I don't think so. It may have started out as a Cape Cod, and over the years it had additions built onto the original structure. Look at the site below. It shows pictures of most designs out there.

The majority of Cape Cods I've seen look like one story dwellings because the second story is hidden by the sloping roof. The design was popularized in New England in the 17th century and has endured. Here's a good website:

No it is not a cape cod, it is the typical bungalow style of the "sears" homes with what might be added shed dormers.
hope that helps.
