It is true that Indian Cricket is at best the second best in the world. There are several reasons for this. However, the reasons may be seen individually, as they affect our cricket at different times in different ways.
First and foremost, Indians have to change their outlook towards sports in general. Parents even today won't prefer their children to be sportspersons and force them to study. Did Kapil and Sachin study a lot - but can any studious person match their achievements and iconic status?
Second, India needs to develop its cricket infrastructure and ensure that the gap between domestic and international cricket is as less as possible. This factor alone is responsible for the difference between Australia and other teams of the day at present.
Third, our Cricket Board and its members should be more experienced than they presently are. Here one is not talking of the selection team, but the Cricket Board and the members. It might not be possible - but, Cricket Board should be free of politics - but this is easier said than done.
Fourth, individual players of our team should try to play cricket (to borrow Geoffrey Boycott's favourite phrase) - "between the ears". Any sport is played with the head - a cool head. Any individual or team that soaks pressure, like a sponge, is bound to be anything but the best.
Fifth, our cricket team should make itself more informed on the importance of body language. No one expects a team to win all the time. The important thing while losing is the attitude. If you go down fighting, there is no disgrace. It's losing by a mile that hurts - both the team and the fans.
Sixth, there should be a limit to the number of advertisements that a cricketer is allowed to do in a year. Too much of appearances in advertisements MIGHT take the focus away from on-field performance in SOME cases - particularly the inexperienced ones.
Last but not the least, this is a factor about which the team can't do anything - the media. The media builds and hypes up the expectations so much that a routine loss appears to be a devastating one amidst allegations of faction-fighting in the team and ego clashes between the coach and the captain.
Finally, the average Indian spectator needs to mature a lot. Going to see the team ONLY winning is not the way to appreciate cricket. Other teams are also capable of playing good cricket. One should applaud the better side - even though our emotional support will be with India always!!!!

India has the largest population among the cricket playing country and in the country the gentlemen game is the most popular. Today it has surpassed and left the national game far behind in popularity and income.
India has produced the best cricket players in the world right from the little master to the master blaster but it could not achive the top ranking position.
India has won the world cup in 1983, if we compare the team of that time and today we find that today we have the best players in the world if we count them individually, but as a team performance we lack co-ordination and that is our main drawback
as it is said that it is not the size of a dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog that counts and, we lack in this too if we loose few quick wickets then the rest of the team give up they do not show the fighting spirit though our team tail enders too have the potential to put a great fight and turn the table. This was something regarding the performance.
Let s analyse the team selcetion, in the slection new players are rarely given chance we do not rely on the youngsters and try to continue with the out of form players and hope some miracle from them. If they show some good performance they make their place for another 10 to 15 matches irrespective of their performance. There should be a continious rotation of the players, this not only help in improving the performance but serching new talents.
If we overcome all this our team can be and will be the best team in the world

That is very simple: Politics and Bureaucracy . These two reasons always been the Achilles heel for India in general and it just extends to cricket.

a) Why is it that we cannot prepare Bouncy pitches that will assist the bowlers and make our batsmen play abroad better? It is because the home team in Domestic season wants to win that game and does not want to take the blame.

b) India is the second largest populated country in the world. Pakistan which is so small produces consistently world class fast bowlers. What is the reason that India cannot produce an even on genuine fast bowler? If you read the stories about the discovery of Waquar Younis or Shoib Akthar, they were noticed in local games and were immediately drafted into the national squad. We don’t do that in India because of politics.

c) Lack of Structured program: This is one more reason India is behind in the world cricket. When talent is noticed, we do not nurture and monitor their progress. We depend too much on senior players and never think about alternatives. While it is hard to duplicate the Tendulkar, Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, we need to have alternative players in case of injury or retirements.

d) While the above three can be worked upon and looked into, the one reason we can never become the best is lack of killer instinct and the indomitable fighting spirit. When an opponent is down, we have the put the foot on the neck and finish the job. There are so many instances in Indian cricket, when we let the opponents off without going for the kill.

No doubt that Indian cricket has come through great hardship throughout the ages and generations by making a mark on the international arena.

We should not forget that CRICKET is an English Sports which we Indians have adopted and have been adopting it as the premier sports of our country and though has produced great cricketers in each era of this game.

I think todays era of cricket is more of professionalism than the which it use to be in the 70s to 90s. Today winning is the key aspect in the game. The team which wins the game is the best in the world. What our Indian cricket team lack is 'consistency'!!.

Though our present Indian team win the matches in great style but also loses the other one in great sorrow.

To be best in the world one need to work very very hard and should be consistent through out. The Australian Team and the South Africans are the example before us.

The Basic of this problem lies in our domestic cricket which have not promoted healthy conditions for the players and the game to groom and grow. No proper infrastructure at the basic levels in the administration, management, training, welfare of the cricketers(excluding the present era of players). The CCI being the richest Board in the world has to look after the problems seriously. More and More money has been poured in to the game and then Accountability should be the key factor.

The Indian Cricket and the players should be more positive in there approach and I think the media becuse of which this game has become globle should be more responsible while comenting to the performance of the team and players.

In the end what I would like to say is that Cricket is a FUNNNY GAME' and winning and lossing are part of it, what is` important is how good you perform on the day.

Therefore give your 100% team India and success is yours.
Best of Luck.
Thank U.

First and foremost "Self Belief". They need to believe that they can win. Most of the time our Indian Team has been losing the match well before game was played. For example, before the start of the world cup - our team management was cautiously giving statements like "we would give our best effort and we have a chance to win."

This tells us that;

a) They are not believing in themselves.

b) They have fear of losing & it's consequences!

If you notice Australia spell out confidently well before the match or tournament - saying they would win. They would even go to the extent saying they are targeting a particular player. At the same time they are not underestimating any team, that's the precise reason why they work hard on their capabilities all the time.

Secondly, of course - we do lack few "Physical" qualities unlike other "Strong" sporting nation(s). Reality is we are made of this. We can optimise our ability - but we can't create what does not exist naturally with us. The vivid example is Fielding. We have not seen our yester players diving. Today at least few players - try to dive. We never had an inch of grass in our grounds. So we could have never acquired the skills. But now - the AMOUNT of money being floated in to cricket in India - we can bring the infrastructe - which is ideally suitable for this. When we do that we shouldn't be biased. Allow the township level teams also to enjoy those benefits. (Please no Regional Quota basis)

With these may be - we would see a light in end of the tunnel.

Beyond this GUYS - Believe! Success gives Confidence! & Confidence gives Success!

As a Fan / Follwer of the game - we should also be reminded that Cricket is after all a SPORT. Of course, no body wants to be in the losing side and our players are not different to this.

Indian cricket is at an all time low, just having been knocked out of the world cup, courtesy bangladesh & sri lanka. there are several reasons for this, and the players are not fully 2 blame for this. As a matter of fact the problem starts with the richest cricket board in the world itself...yes, thats right, im talking about the BCCI. Why are polititians, running a sports body...what the hell do they know about the game, what do they know whats good & whats not for Indian cricket ? The ONLY thing they now is 2 please the fans, their sponsors & the government so that they can fill their tummies with a whole load of money...bloody polititians! The pitches in India are a major problem, they're flat...as flat as a pancake! this does not give scope for batsmen & bowlers alike 2 learn how 2 play & apply themselves when faced with different conditions, when going on tours to australia, south africa or england. The pitches are not of international standars, they must improve. Players must also go & play county cricket. The grounds as well are small, which prevents batsmen from learning the finer aspects of the game like running between the wickets 2 take 1's, 2's & 3's, fielding etc. Talking about fielding, we need 2 improve our fielding standards, 4 which fitness is Very Important. A baseball coach should help improve our fielding. Seniors or not, everyone must play in the domestic matches and perform. get runs, take wickets & field well...then & only then can you b in the team. Many of them are taking their place for granted. the domestic competition as well is not competitive, unlike in australia. due 2 this, we dont have enough players of good quality 2 come in for a tendulkar or a kumble. these & many others need 2 b solved if we ever want indian cricket 2 stage a comeback & produce players of world-class at the international as well as domestic level so that we may one day become the best in the world.

Becomimg the best in any field or sports, whether it be an individual or team sports, what's needed is a young and growing sportsperson who's blessed to conquer any and everything he surveys. Pumping in crores of rupees. sending sports people to all parts of the world and why.. even to the north and south poles to get acclimatised to the different climates of the whole world, use the most experienced and respected coaches for a life time, create a rule to have atleast one big hoarding of the sports stars and see to it every single star is given the same percentage of this kind of fame and for every gold medal in olimpics, the govt.awards you an island and finally for cricketers, if your team reaches the supereight in world cup make the 15 or 16 of the whole team, cheif ministers of their respective states and if more than one is there from a state, cut it in to two states or more according to the situation. I ask Mr. Gavaskar and all others who reads this : Even though everything i've mentioned above is not practically possible, just think of it as possible for a fewminutes ( the time i take to finish answering the question). If all that or a majority of it is possible, do you sincerely beleive we'll get a successful cricket team ? I don't think so. You don't give a single benefit of all i mentioned, now you think it's possible? What stands in between creating a very successful team or an anorexic one we have (related to success) is the economics of the country. It looks like, at present India has some how found a way to reach the buttery smooth highway like an autobahn, from where our country, all the billion and more people in a real fast car, has started moving, and soon, very soon the weight of the billion and more will shift their weight on the pedal, and see what happens?

A couple of decades before a very rich country called America, used to be on top of the medal bracket. They had everything they wanted and that's the reason they used their body strength and their focus of mind in sports. During the same time there was another country too among the top. The Soviet union. They were like America but in a different way. They were forced by their govt. to be a team and deliver. Like that Japan and other countries. They all were somehow great players and greater team players. ' the question why? how? etc all have answers. I'm not mentioning everything because instead of an answer i'll be writing a book. Something like 'the sunny days", an interestingbook i hear. The same couple of decades, or more before, what we were? We were as free as the americans without the kind of money they had, and also backing the communists with out becoming one. We scolded children who played and patted their back when they worked and made money. To cut a loooong story long, i think the spirit of 'we', 'our country' and 'our win', and all things similar has started to happen. If i have to remind you about the people who were blessed to conquer we've had a Dhyan Chand, Ramanathan Krishnan, Mihirsen, Amrithraj brothers, Ramesh Krisnan.Gavaskar, Bedi P.T.Usha, Shiny Wilson and recently Anand and Humpi and hundred others. Wait for some more time and a great cricket team also will be there. This time blessed by the system or economy. You can't expect people from huts to come out wearing branded cloths. Soon there won't be huts but big bungalows or mansions. People then will know that they have to wear branded cloths and call the chauffer to bring either 'Maruthi', (the world no.1car) Merc or BMW.
I'm tired and understand how tiresome it would be for all of you to read. I promise a shorter answer next time.

Because the NOBLE and the ABLE,the Stalwarts, those who can really matter, look the other way and keep themselves compromising by not speaking and not acting against the WRONGS done in the name of improvements.
The Most recent instance was the case of "Captain Saurav Ganguly"
Almost everybody was sure and convinced that the real reason behind the issue was not "cricket" but personal interest of more than one personalities at the helm of affairs.Especially an overwhelming foreigner who was totally ignorant of an Indian psyche and was supported by an opportunist and corrupt official and unethical and unjust aspiring cricketer for getting the covetted captaincy with a fear in the mind of losing his own interest It has been proved beyond doubt time and again that the reasons of policy and principles that were professed many times over for this particular case were not true even for a single instance for any other player.IT WAS ALL FALSE AND CONCOCTED and the stink was so prominent.
But Neither the Media Nor the people who can do something, came out openly to call a spade a spade.
Similarly, everytime some honest players and administrators try to put and raise the best of indian cricket, there are many more selfseeking spoilers to negate the dues to Indian Cricket. Great Cricketers and the Potentially Great ones too must be given the backing they need...and the glory will come automatically to this great & talented cricketing country.
THE FAILURES ARE NOT REALLY DUE TO THE BAD PEOPLE BUT DUE TO THE INACTION AND THE COMPROMISE OF GOOD PEOPLE.

Hello: Sunil

I have been myself a Basket Ball player of National level from U.P.State in late sixties and early seventies and also a sportsman of State level for many years.I was chosen College,University and the District Captains within two years of playing Basket Ball.I was in State Team within two years only.I participated in National hosted by us at Agra in 1971 where General Manekshaw was the chief guest

Why I was chosen so quickly was due to my continued interest, sincere efforts in learning and coordinating the game, besides having full team spirit and sportsman spirit.I had learnt the hard way right from my school level.

We were trained by the Lakshmi Bai College of Pysical Education,Gwalior (M.P) for about 5 months and when we returned we found a great change in our effort and ofcourse the game.It was a rigorous training right from excercises to actual playing the game for over 3-4 hours at a stretch.Basket Ball is perhaps the toughest game next only to swimming and requires a lot of stamina and will power to sustain the speedy game on the court. We hardly had faced any politics.

I feel if the following factors are taken into serious consideration, our cricket team will be umatched by anyother:--

Let us put the country first before us and then any other thing.Let us consider that we are Indians first then anything. This step will definately pave a better understanding and team spirit among the players.

We must think team as a whole and not individually, because every player has his own contribution,be it fielding or batting or even bolling.Once this is achieved the coordination becomes better and the team becomes strong at all places.

We should be sincere and honest and above all hard working since we shall be representing the Country and millions of people will be watching us.

We should maintain our cool,be respectful and honest besides being disciplined which is the core need of the day.Earning is just a part of our effort to win at any cost but not with fowl means but with good game, good fielding and bolling.

Politics if any should be put behind the doors and only consider the Nation and its people who love Indian Team so much and also encourgae them everywhere..

Last but not the least good training besides long practice is a must for one and all and each player should deliver the best at the required time.

Nothing is impossible on the earth, everything can be achieved if we really work hard and face the challenge at any place,I think there is then no question why we can not win at all palces and be called the best in the world.

The questions that nearly two years of non-stop experimentation under coach Greg Chappell were supposed to answer, are still largely unanswered. But at least the Indian captain is no longer trotting out the Guru Greg mantra of “process over results”. He unequivocally stated that the first and only purpose of any changes in the team is to win matches. Now if only his rhetoric matched reality that would be wonderful, but still the suspicion remains that experiments are being done while not really worrying about winning each and every game.

The ironic predicament that the Indian management faces is that the players it had written off as being unsuitable for the “future” seem to be the ones whose places are almost certain in the World Cup squad. The experienced duo of Sourav Ganguly and Zaheer Khan had been at the receiving end of much innuendo about their work ethic, their commitment to the cause, etc. So it must indeed be sweet retribution for them that they are now the key batsman and bowler for team India.

The upshot is that the Indian squad for the World Cup is likely to be almost identical to the team Dravid and Chappell inherited when Ganguly was stripped of his captaincy. The only new faces from that time are S. Sreesanth to replace the injured Ashish Nehra, and the late flourishing wicketkeeper who has been converted into a batsman, Dinesh Karthik.

It would be good if the team management acknowledged this fact and started to play this squad of players in the rest of the matches before the trip to the West Indies. It is time the men in blue finally started to gel as a unit, though since most of them were part of the team anyway under Ganguly it may be more like a re-union.

In any case the core that was almost destroyed rather callously and willfully by the current team management with its “mad scientist” approach, where a different eleven was tried in thirty odd successive matches, and players were pushed up and down the batting order like yo-yos, will now once again lead India’s charge in the World Cup. The question is will the present team management survive past the World Cup, regardless of how well or poorly India does in that event? The chances of that look rather slim.
