Well there are three basic parties in the United States (if that is what you are asking.)
First there is the Republican Party.
They are usually conservative, most try to limit government spending and keep taxes low. This could be changing, since the current Republican controlled government has spent far more than the previous Democratic controlled government. Republicans are generally for the death penalty and strongly against abortion. Most support the war in Iraq, and prefer to stop problems outside of US soil before they come here. Republicans are also usually very Christian, and tend to live in more rural areas of the United States. The typical Conservative is a caucasian, very pro-business, many are successful businessmen. They tend to be very pro-family values. Also, against gay marriage and gay adoption.
There is the Independent Party.
Independents have mixed views from both sides, and prefer to vote for the candidate who they believe best fits their profile of an ideal candidate.
Last, the Democratic Party.
Democrats are usually liberal, they believe that it is perfectly fine to tax those with large amounts of money, and are strong with government programs (government run education, healthcare, Social Security, etc.) Democrats tend to spend less on junk bills (multi-million dollar bridge to nowhere in Alaska). They believe in trying to spend government money as efficiently as possible. Democrats are generally against the death penalty, prefering Life in Prison as the highest sentence. Democrats tend to be pro-choice when it comes to abortions, but may sway. Most are against the war in Iraq. They believe the the best way to prevent terrorism on US soil is to stop messing with world politics. They believe that the reason that people do not like us is because we are careless with our foreign policy, and are only breeding more terrorists by acting in such a way. Most Democrats are very pro-environment, and a majority don't see a problem with gay marriage/civil unions. The typical Democrat is a middle-aged highly college-educated person, who is involved in community projects and charities.

Generally, "liberal" (most Democrats) want more government control over economic issues and less on social issues; "conservative" want more control over social issues and less over economic issues.
I'll try to address each statement in your "Additional Details."
1. A pro-life, anti-abortion stance is solidly Republican.
2. Anti-gay marriage is pretty strongly Republican.
3. Foreign aid seems to be both parties with the scale tipping toward the Democrats.
4. Being against the war in Iraq is pretty Democratic.
5. Believing the Federal government should control all laws (anti-States' rights) is definitely more Democratic.
6. No political party would endorse that there is no need for political parties (obviously, or they'd be out of business).
7. If you know you're not a conservative, then you may be a Democrat or Libertarian. Go to www.lp.org and take "The World's Smallest Political Quiz" to find out.
8. All political parties agree that the educational system is poor, they just disagree about how to deal with it. Republicans and Libertarians believe that local control is the answer because people in the schools' communities have a greater interest in seeing the schools succeed. Democrats generally believe that more funding and programs from Washinton D.C. is the answer.
9. All political parties are pro-environment, they just disagree about how it is to be handled. If you think the research should be funded by tax dollars, then you have Democratic sympathies in this cause.
10. "I believe the government which governs best, governs the least" is a quote from Henry David Thoreau, whose views were staunchly Libertarian.
Educate yourself on the issues. Don't let politicians and those who are committed to the cause persuade you. If you read, say, a book about global warming, don't make up your mind until you have read what the opposition has to say.

Generally, as a previous answerer stated, Republicans tend to lean to a more conservative ideology; government stays out of people's way, meaning less funding for welfare, economic aid, and the like. Democrats, generally leaning to a more liberal ideology, tend to say, "Hey, the government really should help out with stuff like medical aid (free medical aid for everyone is a huge issue right now), welfare, and stuff like that."
It's a mistake to assume that all Democrats are liberal hippie communist wackos and that all Republicans are conservative Bible-thumping hillbillies. Just... don't do it. I'm firmly of the belief that such classification of either party is what is separating this nation.
On the other side of things, Independent can be a great segue into the political world; if you want to be a conscientious voter, which it appears you do, you are essentially forced into researching the various candidates, which is great for being an informed voter. Good luck!

STAY AWAY FROM BOTH THE DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN PARTIES! THEY ARE BOTH CORRUPT AND WILL SELL YOU OUT! DON'T BUY INTO THE LEFT/RIGHT PARADIGM THEY PUSH ON YOU!
If you really want to be a member of a political party check out the Libertarians and the Constitution Party. Also look into the Reform and Green Parties.
Just for Gods sake DO NOT BECOME A DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN!
Check out the Libertarians, Constitution, Reform and Green parties before you make your final decision.
Just a side note: The Green Party is a socialist party. So if you're not into socialism (and you shouldn't be) they aren't the choice for you. I list them only because they are a major third party.

If you want to pay lots of taxes then the democratic party is for you. If you want to keep more of your hard earned money then choose Republican. Democrats like high taxes and believe that the government can decide what is best for people. Republicans believe that people can take care of themselves with very little government messing in their lives.

go to wikipedia and type in the different parties.
In all realities both of the parties are about the same these days. The only differences is that the democrats/liberals lean a little more toward socialism than the republicans do. But both parties want all different types of wealfare and taxation to redistribute wealth (aka socialism, not being dumb but plain and simply redistributing wealth is socialism.)

Liberals/democrats scare me, here's why......
First of all, liberalism has socialistic and Marxist roots. The Democratic party has been influenced significantly by liberal thought and have become the Neo-Marxists of today. They have changed the party and made it Marxist leaning. George P. Lakoff from the University of California, Berkeley is one of the fathers of Neo-Marxism and the ACLU and is a major funding and enforcement body that influences liberal and Neo-Marxist thought in the US.
Liberals and Neo-Marxists believe in the following:
-- Christians are obstacles to an "enlightened" society
-- Drugs should be legalized
-- Homosexual marriage is equal to marriage between a man and a woman
-- Against states legally mandating that parents be informed when their underage daughters have abortions
-- Abortion is good for society and is not killing a human being
-- Euthanasia is also good for society and not killing a human being
-- America is harmful to the world
-- We should appease our enemies
-- People should be allowed into the US without legal process and there should be open borders
-- Large socialized & state run programs with high taxation are good for society such as socialized medicine, transportation, media, products and services.
-- Believe in "income redistribution"--that is, the government taxing affluent Americans at a higher proportional rate in order to fund entitlements to the less well off.
Neo-Marxists want to change America by weakening the country as a nation and significantly destroying the social fabric that has been been built over 200 years of our existence. This is a cultural war, the stakes are high, and America is losing its sense of morality.

republicans.....governement stay out of the people's way, but at the same time we won't help the people as much.
democrats......government is a part of my life like my brother or sister, and because of that it will help me when needed.
independents......somewhere in the middle of it all.
fascists and communists.......this is what happens when either republicans or democrats become wayy to extreme in their conservatism or liberalism.
