Yes it is illegal by most local & residential codes, the reason is mainly for saftey, to protect against leaks from the tank or the connections that is why all propane tanks are positioned outside the home at a minimum of 50 ft from the home. if you notice most portable tanks have rubber hoses connecting to the source they can become dryrotted for many reasons and if it leaks you had better run for the hills. please try to be safe when using these types of tanks,

The reason propane is so dangerous indoors is not only the fire/explosion hazard, but CO hazards. Burning propane produces CO, which is a odorless, colorless gas that is poisonous. This is why most propane appliances come with instructions to "use in well ventilated area".
NOT A GOOD IDEA

i dont believe it is, they are ment for personal use outside of the house, so i cant imagine that it would be illegal inside your home. I use the small desposable ones in my heater when I am working in the garage. I would imagine it is okay as long as it is not a permanent instalation. if it is, then you may have and issue.
