I did some searches and found this swaddle blanket and loved the idea of holding in the hands. For the first months only.

I allways used my swaddle blankets Walmart brand ones for the first month or with my winter baby I used blanket sleepers.
Sids Alliance like blanket sleepers to.
Blanket sleepers are great. They keep the baby from scratching there face and keep them mobile enough in the legs. And changing diapers at night was great I never woke them up as i did when they had snapped or zipper legged ones.

Take a look at those two sites and make your own choice on if you want to use a normal baby blanket or not. It has the links for SIDS also and any other risks.
Personal I live in a cold climate so we used something from birth.

My babies always just kicked them off anyway; I lived in upstate NY when they were small, so I just put on 2 sleepers and socks and they were fine and toasty, probably warmer than their parents! There are also [at least there were 10 year ago] these sort of, um, quilted things that you can put your baby in that zip up to the baby's chest and the back part is longer so is under their head. I used those, too. They were sort of like baby sleeping bags but with that lower space in the front; there was no way to kick it off and no way for baby to POSSIBLY put it over his head. They are only good for little babies, though, because when the baby starts moving around his crib I'd think they would be restrictive.

My doctor told me a story about a 2 yr old boy that suffocated himself to death in his sleep by getting rolled up into his blanket...
The only blankets I use are ones that the baby can breathe through just in case it goes over her head, usually a family member knits one for me. My oldest is 9 and she started with a regular blanket when she was about 4 yrs old.

we had an almost 6 month old in respite foster care this past weekend. I know nothing about babies, but we were putting a blanket over the bassinet. (he's a little on the small side for his age)

SIDS is the risk factor until about 1 year old. Actually, as long as you put your baby to sleep on their back, and they are able to lift their head alone, for a long period of time, it is okay to give them a small blanket. Most babies don't need a blanket unless it is really cold. My son always kicks his blanket off anyway. Just put warm pj's and socks on and he/she will be okay.

I have always put a blanket over my son..He`s almost 7 months old now and of course can roll over, so I just go in and check on him...But he`s just like "Linus" of of Charlie Brown and likes to snuggle with his blanket!! He won`t sleep without it..

I have swaddled since my son was born. I now just swaddle and leave his arms out. I guess because the blanket is under him is why swaddling is recomended. I like the above advice use a blanket that he can breathe through/

i put a light blanket over my baby since she was newborn. At that age, they aren't likely to move so much that it'll go over their face and smother them. Wrap it around the baby snug, or tuck it underneath his back so it doesn't become loose

Suffocation is not SIDS. They have changed the way they rule a SIDS death and suffocation is suffocation it is no longer considered SIDS. My daughter died of SIDS so I've done my research. SIDS has been known to happen up until 1 year but the risk decreases after six months. I know three people in my SIDS group that lost their babies at 10 month and two at 12 months. There are also 2 that lost their baby to SIDS while their baby was awake so it doesn't even have to happen while they are sleeping. SIDS has not decreased because babies are sleeping on their backs it decreased because they have changed the parameters for how they determine a SIDS death.
