It is the general manager who is responsible for acquiring the talent for the team and A.J. Smith is considered one of the best. The head coach is responsible for getting the most out of the talent that the GM puts on the field. I suppose they made the right call, but they should have done it a month ago instead of letting the drama drag out.
On the other hand, the GM did let Drew Brees go to free agency. If they had kept Brees, I believe the would have gone undefeated and won the Superbowl.

This was one crazy year for coaching changes. Between My Steelers, Cowboys, and know Chargers waiting too long in there decisions. Ok Dallas seems to be happy with the S.D. DC. But why didn't the owner just give Marty a new 5 year deal along with the GM job. Keep Marty there until he retires and keep building for the future. Marty is/was (somebody will pick him up down the road) going to win a SuperBowl down the road as long as he coaches. Look who never won the "big one" until recently; Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy. It wasn't Marty's fault they lost that game against the Pats. It was that one stupid play to intercept the ball. To Me, it was a greedy play by the defensive player. Just play the rules of football and knock the ball down. you get better field position and the game is basically over. Instead the New England mystic lives on in S.D. I feel sorry for all You S.D. fans. I like S.D. a lot and I am I true Steeler's fan (born and raised). But all that tallent and now You guys have to find the "right guy', just like the Steelers. It's ashame they both are such talented teams. Get rid of that GM in S.D.

No way, AJ Smith is either really lucky or really knows what he is doing. First, he traded the rights to mike vick and look who the chargers got...LT probably the best football player there is now. Second, he put together a Super Bowl caliber team by making moves such as trading the rights to Eli Manning for picks that would become Shawne Merriman, Nate Kaeding, and Phillip Rivers...all Pro Bowlers. He knows what he's doing and the Chargers will win the Super Bowl next year.

• Brees - have been given greater suitable than maximum folk concept he became worth, $22 million over 2 years, coming off significant shoulder surgical technique, previous overall performance, and the signing of Rivers, who's production, via the way, is interior the comparable class as Brees. • Turner - have been showing loyalty to LT via letting him flow. undesirable flow. • Junior Seau, Rodney Harrison, Donnie Edwards - needed quite some money. None had greater suitable than 2 huge-unfold or good years after leaving. • Shawne Merriman - based on the earnings he's finding for, him noving on could be a no longer so clever flow. • Ladainian Tomlinson - As a 32 year previous RB coming off the year he had, is he worth $7,000,000 next year? No. • Antonio Chromartie - different than for premier the league in interceptions twelve months, has been over rated. • Lorenzo Neal - Who mandatory a 38 year previous facebook? • Chris Chambers - Had seventy seven receptions final 2½ years with Chargers. you're exaggerating the seriousness.

The owner is the one who pulled the trigger on Marty. And supposedly, much of it had to do with Marty wanting to hire his son onto the coaching staff. Marty is a great regular season coach. But he is terrible in the postseason. If San Diego's goal is to win Super Bowls and not division titles, then firing Marty was the smart thing to do.

not yet. first see if the SD chargers go to the superbowl next year.if the next coach is great and if they do go to the superbowl then the GM would be seen as a hero. if they don't then they should FIRE the GM
and AJ smith is one of the best talent go getters in the NFL, AND the best losers of the best talent in the NFL.
Drafted a QB that did not want to go to SD, Almost lost Antonio Gates. Lost Drew Brees (and look at him now). he almost did not draft a RB in the 2001 draft....named LaDainian Tomlinson

They'd be crazy to fire A.J. Smith. He's part of the reason that the team is built to win super bowls. Marty just couldn't put it all together fast enough to everyone's liking. Now, if he drafts another running back instead of what they really need(like a completely re-built recieving corps), then we should start calling for his head. But until then, he's at the top of his game.

The Chargers will need more then a credit card to find their next Coach. Maybe the Personnel man(Nye) should be kept,...but A.J.
Smith knows about as much about running a Football team as the Mayor of NY!! Fire this Guy now(if Spanos were Smart)

I think it should be considered. Marty was a good coach they went 14-2. Sometimes you just have to put your personal feelings about a person behind you and do what is best for the team and it remains to be seen if this was good or not.

it wasnt AJ Smiths fault that they didnt run LT against the pats like they should have done. they could have been superbowl champs by now and marty would still have his job along with all his other assistants. AJ has done a good job acquiring talent and building what used to be the laughing stock of the NFL into one of the best teams right now.
