I think I remember reading somewhere that it's Marsellus Wallace's soul, that it was removed through the back of his skull (that's why he's got the band-aid there)... that some culture believes that's where you would extract one's soul...
I also read (what I thought was) a really cool story, sort of linking Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs...
That at the end of Reservoir Dogs, Mr. Pink (Steve Buschemi) escapes with the briefcase that they had stolen from the jewelery store, and you hear him get shot (but you don't see what happens), but the story goes that he stashed the briefcase on the street, and that Brett (from Pulp Fiction) found it and picked it up... and that John Travolta - Vincent Vega- and Samuel L Jackson - Jules Winnfield- were sent by Marsellus Wallace to pick it up... since you never actually see the jewels that were supposed to be in the briefcase...
I don't know if that's what it was supposed to be, but I figure there's got to be more than one link between the two movies.
(The one link obviously being the Vega Brothers: John Travolta - Vincent Vega- in Pulp Fiction, and Michael Madsen - Vic Vega- in Reservoir Dogs).

Director Quentin Tarentino claims it is up to the viewer to determine this.But many avid fans speculate it was Marcellus Wallace's soul,the combo to the briefcase was 666.

I guess it's open to interpretation!
