A portion of the hardwood floor in our dining room was replaced with laminate planks that don't match. So I have this big rectangular area that's a cherry finish, surrounded by the original oak. I am debating on pulling up the laminate and replacing it with hardwood planks that I can stain to match, or is it possible to sand down the laminate and restain it? I have some experience in sanding wood and staining, but not any with laminate floors. The package that had some leftover pieces in it says it has a polycarbon surface? Also, the laminate planks are 3" wide, whereas the oak planks, the original with the house I believe, a 1950's house, are 2" wide. Do they still make hardwood flooring 2" wide?

Unfortunately since the laminated finish on the wood is so thin, you can not sand and refinish. If you are unable to find the 2" wide planks that match closely to what you want, you could get wider ones and rip them to fit. Good luck

it depends on what they consider to be laminate, typically a pre-finish can be sanded but a true laminate cannot be, I own a flooring business in Janesville WI and hear this question a lot honestly, I try to keep people from buying anything but the real thing, because even though real wood might need to be sanded more often, point is, is that it can be refinished later on unlike a lot of manufactured, and durability wize if you use poly-urethane holds up about the same over the years to be honest.
Hardwood Refinishing low as $1per square foot
#2 Common Red Oak Low as $4.45 per square foot, and finished!
Brazilian Cherry starting at $7.95 per square foot, and finished (all sizes!)

Lumber liquidators has 2-1/4" oak flooring for 99 cents/square foot. Thats the way I'd do it. Laminate is too thin and cheap to stain and it would never ever match.

You have a tuff row to hoe!

Typically laminates can be very thin, the varnish is the wear layer.
When that layer is gone, your done.

Yes , they still do manufacture oak 2" wide (industry standard).

Doing is the only way we learn, it comes with a price.
