1 Do not smoke or expose yourself to secondhand smoke 2 drink Water with lemon-lubricates the throat (the water) and the lemon will aid in killing germs. When you do get a sore throat from straining your voice which drinking water during a performance like between songs will help with-keeps throa tissue moist and lubricated for a dry throat more easily irritated--Gargle with Brown Vinegar(White will not work for all the good stuff distilled out of it-can get Brown Vinegar any health food store preferably BRAGGS)Mix 2 tablespoons of brown vinegar in 1cup of lukewarm water and a little bit of honey although better straight together and Gargle(DO NOT SWALLOW)the brown vinegar kills Bacteria ,loosens the junk Spit it out for you do not want to swallow and take into your sytstem Bacteria.Vinegar has been used to kill Bacteria and Viruses for even before the time of the Romans-Have used the straight vinegar(no water) on a sore throat that nothing else helped and within a matter of a few days Gone. Its also healthy esp for energy and good health to drink Brown Vinegar mixed in some water and add1 to 2 teaspoons of Honey-water shld be lukewarm for the honey mixes better than in cold. I'd drink before a performance for the honey lubricates the throat and bactreria killed by the vinegar and both have high amts of potassium and minerals so your energy level will be high and also after to replace minerals, electrolytes lost in sweat.

Always warm-up your voice prior to your preformance, there are many internet site that have vocal warm-ups. No matter how foolish they may sound when you do them, JUST GO FOR IT!! As well vocal warm-ups are universal so no matter what kind of music you and our band play it will work. Drink lots of water before, during and after the preformance. Finally practice, practice, practice.

I also heard that American Idol contestants drink olive oil to help them clear their throats. I can't say I've actually done it 1. cuz it's nasty and i puked when i tryed it and 2. its a bloody cup of oil. Who know you might be able to do it.

You need to strengthen your voice. Get some direction from your music coach. Always warm up before a performance. Some tea with honey after a performance is also good. Mainly, you need to do vocal excercizes that will strengthen your vocal cords.

My friend who's studying theater/singing says you should drink a little straight lemon juice before singing because it strips your throat of junk and gives you a clearer voice. I don't know how true that is; it's just what she told me.

It shouldn't "hurt", you must not be projecting, talk to a vocal teacher at least once or twice about it, they will check how you're singing and help you adjust it.
