If it's emergency, then sometimes you are asleep. But, planned c-sections you are awake.

Likes other have said, it depends. If it's an emergency c-section, they may not have time to insert an epidural (if not already in place). My first c-section I was awake the whole time, but it wasn't a big rush to get the baby out. My second c-section I started out awake and ended up being put to sleep because the epidural wore off during the procedure. For the most part though, the mother stays awake.

After just having my third c-section and knowing a few other women who have also had c-sections, i know that you can make the choice to be awake or not.
I was awake during all of mine so my hubby could be in there, but a friend of mine had an emergency c-section and was asleep during hers, so it is really up to you and your doctor

You are awake, the girl will be given an epidural which will numb her from the tummy down. She probably won;t feel any pain but lots of pressure and pulling. The only way she would be put to sleep was if it was an emergency c-section

It depends on the situation, and NO you don't get to choose. I work in the OR as a surg tech and when somone comes in to have a c-section done and have to be put totally under it makes the siutation even more critical, that is why the father is not allowed in the room. The baby gets every bit of anesthetic that the mother is given so time is everything. When I had my emergency c-section they had my son out within 4 minutes of making the first incision. For someone that is not put out it is usally about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the doctor and the position of the baby. Once the anesthesia is administered it is very critical to get that baby out. If you look at what that anesthesia does to you just think what it does to that baby. So NO you CAN NOT be put out just because you want to that goes agains hospital regulations and a surgeon can be fined and lose his license for allowing that to happen.

At our hospital, women are usually awake with an epidural. Sometimes they are put to sleep for various reasons. I'm guessing that most places they will try to do it with you awake if possible, because putting you to sleep is ALWAYS associated with more risk than not putting you to sleep.
That said, most of the time the epidural offers complete anesthesia. I know someone else said she felt every cut, and that does happen, but it's far from being the norm.
Congrats on your pregnancy.

I have had two c-sections and I have been awake for both of them. They numb me from the breast area down, and I didnt feel anything (besides a little pushing and tugging, but NOT PAINFUL). The only time Ive heard of someone being put to sleep if its an emergency c-section. I hope this helps you.

I have had 3 c-sections 2 emergency and one much slower paced. I was awake for all three. Had an epidural with the first and a spinal with the other 2. spinal was much easier!
Good luck and congrats on the coming baby!

I guess that depends. I had one 7 weeks ago, and I was awake. They gave me numbing drugs (epidural) but other than that I was awake for the whole thing..I haven't heard of them putting you out for a c-section, but I'm sure it is done.
My c-section was an emergency c-section because my daughters heart rate dropped and after deliver they said the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck...
sounds like it's different everywhere, Im in Cali.

Usually you are awake, I was awake during mine, they just gave me an epidural for the pain. If it is an emergency they will usually do it under general anasetic and you are put to sleep. In most cases you can choose if you want to be awake or not.

I had an emergency c-section and was awake for it. I wish they had knocked me out completely though - was a very terrifying experience for me. But that's only because I have extreme claustrophobia and not being able to move my body from the midsection down was quite possibly the worst experience of my life.
