I just went to my gyno today and got YAZ birth control...has anyone ever tried it, and if so...what did you think of it? This is my first time taking any type of birth control, so I was wondering. Please, any type of info would help.

I take Yasmin, the higher-dose version of Yaz. They contain the same progestin (drospirenone) so I guess I'm qualified to answer this question. Keep in mind that the estrogen dose of my pill is 10 micrograms higher (I think). I do better with moderately low-dose pills because I experience spotting (random bleeding) with really low-dose pills.

I love Yasmin, because drospirenone has a lot of anti-androgenic properties. That means that if you have slightly elevated levels of male hormone, or a tendency to male pattern body hair growth, Yasmin will probably help you out. Also, it does help a lot of people's skin, and is sometimes prescribed by dermatologists. My skin is amazing on Yasmin -- always glowing, without a pimple in sight.

Drospirenone is also a slight diuretic, which means you won't probably won't retain as much water as on other birth control pills. That's why some people report weight loss on Yaz and Yasmin. However, the pill does have a tendency to ramp up appetite, and it did this to me. Weight gain was fairly minimal -- 5-10 pounds at most, and I'm a tall girl and an athletic college student, so I'm not so worried about it. Minor weight gain is a fair price to pay for reliable birth control.

A lot of people have reported depression, headaches and mood swings on Yasmin/Yaz. I didn't experience these things, but keep them in mind. Finding the right birth control pill can take multiple tries. If you're feeling crappy after the second month on Yaz, I'd advise you to go to your gyno and ask her for a different type of pill.

I hope all goes well!

Oh and also -- you may very well experience breast growth as well!

I took Yasmin for 6 months in part of 2006 and the very first week was rough for me b/c I felt like I wanted to cry all the time for a few days and had some other symptoms. When things settled down I did ok for the rest of the time I was on it as far as not dealing with those side effects. I am on a different pill now but won't take Yaz again b/c of the symptoms in the first week.

I hope that it helps you hun.

ANY birth control is very dangerous. It effects your hormone balances and estrogen production, and can cause a LOT of problems like birth control, etc. I would advise natural methods of birth control, i.e. protection and a firtility calendar. That is the SAFEST method (I was studying to be a nurse and found out a lot of things)... if you want to have a child eventually, Yaz especially increases your risk of miscarriages.

Just take the medications as prescribed by your doctor and follow the instructions carefully.

If you feel weird symptoms..then you should call your doctor immediately...and if after you take it and you don't like it for whatever reason you can try other alternatives to contraception.

I took it for 6 months a year ago.
Never again.
I had depression and anxiety from them.
But...everyone reacts differently to different things.
