No doubt, I think Malkin is the Calder this year.

Nevertheless, honorable mention goes to:

Anze Kopitar - Kings
Jordan Staal - Penguins
Matt Carle - Sharks
Mike Smith - Stars

malkin is the obvious choice, but i think that people are a little hesitant to vote for him because of that. staal, yes, twenty plus goals is great, however, he is not calder trophy material. if for some reason malkin doesnt win it, it will go to anze kopitar. malkin plays with sidney crosby, who has more points than probably the entire kings team put together, and that will be a factor in some voters minds, but not enough to get him rookie of the year. a couple of other guys worth mentioning are paul stastny and wojtek wolski in colorado. the season is far from over, espescially with so many teams in the playoff hunt. and should malkin go down with an injury tomorrow (knock on wood), you never know who could get it. if the season was over today though, it would go to evgeni malkin

Well....it looks like its going to be Malkin. However....Jordan staal is catching up to him in goals. Doesnt he have 4 less goals than malkin. well...im not sure but he is doing pretty good on account that some people doubted him into making it to the NHL. You never know...i bet malkin is going to get the rookie of the year....well...make the best man win.

I'm a huge Evgeni Malkin fan, and I'm extremely tired of people talking about Anze Kopitar as the rookie of the year. If anyone else should be considered for the award Jordan Staal should be. Show me one other rookie in the league that has 23 goals, a plus/minus rating over 10, leads the league in shorthanded goals, plays even strength, shorthanded, powerplay, and 5 on 3. The guy not only has ridiculous scoring potential he is constantly making defensive plays. He is already one of the most complete players in the league.

Right now, my top three are 1) Malkin; 2) Anze Kopitar; 3) Jordan Staal.

Anze Kopitar-he plays on the worst team in the much tougher western conference. He is exciting to watch and would have great numbers if he wasn't playing on a line by himself. Malkin plays in the eastern-no defense allowed conference and most teams play their best players against Crosby. Who the hell do the Kings have? Kopitar will be a Forsberg.
Phil Kessel should win too-he has more balls than any rookie-even if he doesn't.

I am thinking Malkin myself, but there are a few players that may upset him by the end of the season. One of these players could be Kopitar in LA and Jordon Staal on his own team. These two are both great players but they would have to do a lot in the last part of the season to win the Calder Trophy.

The award is almost always based purely on stats. If the season were to end today, Malkin would have it in the bag. And as it stands, it looks like thats what's going to happen.

Id say Malkin easy. He is in the top 15 in points. He has been outstanding. They are building something special over in Pittsburgh.
