Some people don't. For me it rendered me unfertile for 4 years. It can take 6-12 months (even more) the depo shot to leave your body. Every person is different. It's like saying another person had symptoms you did when you were pregnant. But, it is a fact and saying it doesn't render someone else infertile period is only an opinion. It is not an actual fact. And when more than one person says it rendered them infertile, maybe there is something to it. That is not to say every woman is the same. I am glad you did not have the same experience.

First and foremost I would like to add to this that you are not a doctor at least it doesn't seem like you are so how would you know that the depo provera shot doesn't cause infertility. Do you know how the depo shot was tested before it was brought to the U.S to be used as a form of birth control, it was used on women in africa to see what the long term effects would be and the short term effects. Some women were easily able to become pregnant three months after the shot had been administered and others it took longer and for others it either took much longer or just didn't happen. here are some statistics for you

Delay in ability to become pregnant
After the last injection of Depo-Provera, it takes an average of 9 to 12 months to become pregnant:

* 68% of women conceive within 12 months.
* 83% of women conceive within 15 months.
* 93% of women conceive within 18 months.

As a former depo provera user I was first administered the shot in May of 2004 and found out in March of 2005 that I was pregnant, I had followed up on my shots as needed so that came as a shock to me, after the birth of my son I thought I would give the shot a try again and had another shot administered in November of 2005 it is now February of 2007 a total of 15 months has gone by since my first shot and after about 8 months of trying keep in mind those months that we had started trying 9 months had already passed since I had received the shot, I am still not ovulating regularly and my period is still messed up. This has also happened to a good friend of mine, my doctor highly advised me against going with the shot when I went in to get on another form of birth control to regulate my period ( she misunderstood what I wanted it for ) and she told me she has had a lot of women who have had problems conceiving after taking this birth control. So again and this is me being polite please do some research or ask around before posting something with such a strong opinion or even trying to state a fact that the depo shot is not to blame for some womens infertility ( those who have taken the shot )

Thank You and have a wonderful day!!

Probably because a large number of people have difficulty conceiving after depo! And difficulty doesn't mean ever-just an average of 12 months or so. Just like everything thing else medical, the shot affects each woman differently! Great for you and your good luck, but not everyone is as lucky!

Well that would be because everyone I have ever known who has taken depo including myself it took years to get pregnant after wards. I was also told by a fertility doctor that the depo shot messes up women's cycles so bad some never recover. It's great to not get your period...but it's also unnatural. It's not good for your body. Getting a 3 month dose of hormones in one shot is not good for your cycle. You should probably talk to some more people. It's not a "claim" it happens.

First- Do you have proof?
Second- "The Pill" if taken for a period of 5 years+ can cause infertility, why would depo-provera shots be any less harmful? The shot is a larger dose of hormone therapy, it could be even worse than what the pill does.
The probably just havent done enough research on it yet.

I was on it for about 7 years and I did get pregnant a little over a year later and had two m/c back to back...I look up the depo shot on the Internet and you wouldn`t believe how many woman had problems with m/c and not being able to get pregnant for 3-4 years or more (that already had kids) I can`t say that it`s what caused mine but I wouldn`t recommend it to anyone I know...Also right before I got off it my hair started to fall out alot!!

Because with any hormonal BC it is a risk, and they say infertile because of the time it can take you to conceive.

What are other medical drawbacks and risks?

I have heard this as well. Actually, what I heard is that using it for a long time makes a build-up in your fallopian tubes, this build up makes it hard to conceive. I am not sure what the "build-up" is or what causes it. I would guess this started from people who go a year or so with no period after getting off of the shot.

I personaly had normal periouds from 13-19 and i started having sex at 19 didnt want to have a baby right away and i didnt want to rely on the pill or myself. than after 1 shot i didnt get my MP for 2 years (and still) unless i forced it. not all people become infertal from the shot but for some ppl it causes problems. its just a low rate and its becoming more obvious as more women think how great the shot is.
