The saying means 'shut the door', as you are aware.
This saying comes from the old style of barn which was open at the sides. Modern barns are often close-sided, hence don't really fit the saying. Howver the old style of barn had a roof, but open sides, so 'if you were born' in such a stucture it would be likely (metaphorically) that you would be likel;y to leave doors open and everyone else suffering from the draught.
Not a very enlightning expalnation, sorry, just a straightforward explanation and a request to 'shut the door.'
Hope thast helps,

That would mean that you are a pig. You don't care if the door is open or not. Farm animals don't need the privacy of a closed door. Also, most barns do not have air conditioning and those animals don't pay for it either way. The only time closing the barn door would apply would be if it were very cold outside.

Barn doors are usually left open.
Those born in barns are presumed to be raised in barns.
Those raised in barns are not taught to close the door as they grow up.
Clear?

Is this really a saying? I've heard "Were you raised in a barn?" and "Were you born in a barn?" many times, but never this particular phrasing until just now when my husband pointed out a commercial in which a guy says it, and your question came up when I typed it into a search. Is this common in some particular region? I grew up in the southern U.S., and he grew up in the U.S. midwest, and neither of us has ever heard it said in this way before.

Because barn doors are very large, people living on farms don't close them every single time they walk in and out. They just open them up in the morning when they need work done in there and close them up at night.

In before years there have been no supermarkets and each and every ones milk become added through a milkman to their personal homestead door. initially the milkman had a horse and cart to provide this milk, yet in a while hand guided electric powered trailers were used, in a while those were replaced to small electric powered vehicles in which the milkman ought to take a seat to force it. i am going to keep in mind all 3 forms of delivery cart. also the actual undeniable reality that the milkman actual entered lots of the houses he become vacationing. This inevitably led to many rumours extremely even as the spouse and children become undesirable and they gained an excellent provide of milk. i recognize for a reality because I suggested what become occurring on my thanks to regular college, that the community milkman in Edmonton, North London stopped for 1/2 an hour or in order to visit at least one lady in my highway in the late 60s. added milk had to be provided at a later level to fulfill her maternity needs. most often they use this to imply your messy or more likely like a barn animal. you see the farmer knows to close the door the animals don't and they don't clean up after themselves.
