Ok so last year i didn't do so hot in math. But this year when i went to go look at when the last lesson was, it was introducing my to trigonometry and it looked like i had been doing it for a little while now. Is it weird to be doing trigonometry in 8th grade? what should i be learning in 8th grade right now?

well intro to trig isn't really going to be trig, it is just going to be the basics... my alg. book and my gemo. book had something about trig in the title

in 8th grade I took alg. 1 and I was 1 grade level above normal
so most people took pre-alg. I also know some people who took geometry.

These are the basic classes in the (general) order you take them in:
pre-algebra
algebra 1
geometry
algebra 2
pre-calculus
calculus

alg. is usually only 1 year long but you were probably just taking pre-alg. and stuff like that, they like to put algebra on the title of books

I wouldn't delve into trigonometry so much...at least not until grade 10

Here's what I had gone through in grade 8:

1) Basic Algebra ==> solve for 'x' problems with equalities and inequalities.

2) Geometry ==> Areas and Volumes of shapes such as Cones, Triangles, Trapezoids, Rectangles, Circles, Spheres

==> This can be sub-divided into:
a) Basic Intro to trigonometry: sin, cos, tan functions
b) Basic graphing skills: graph the geometric shape with the given coordinates

3) Operations with fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing.

4) Probability and Numbers: calculating percentages, real numbers, and statistics (more like accounting, you know, basic addition and subtraction of assets and credits)

Good Luck and keep studying hard! P.S. Don't forget to have fun! =)

How about this...I'm an educator from Ohio. I can tell you that our content standards require us to touch on Trig at that level. There are more basic skills that you need to develop before you can do a lot with Trig, but they will come with time. If would be happy to tell you more, if I knew what you were actually doing with Trig, but without Algebra II, you wouldn't really be able to get into the real Trig stuff.

Also, for the student that dislikes Geometry, that's because you're probably not a visual learner. Not a big deal, just focus on the equations and not on the pictures.

You should be taking Geometry in 8th grade. Although that was considered advanced a few years ago, it is now becoming the norm.
It is normal to learn basic trigonometry in Geometry.

Hmm, well, I'm in 8th grade right now and we're doing a LOT of coordinate plane and inequalities and stuff. I'm in honors at a very good private school (even though I'm not doing so well) and we haven't learned any trigonometry yet, although I think we're going to be doing that towards the end of the year.

But anyways, I don't think you should worry about it. You seem pretty smart! =D

Whoa, trig in 8th Grade? Are you sure it was trig or geometry with some basic trig?

Numbers- Review percentages, decimals, and fractions.
Geometry- Find surface area, find volume, and the pythagorean theorem.
Probability- Make sure you know basic stuff (what is the chance that I pull a red toy out of a bag of 10 red toys?)
Algebra- Solving equations with one variable. Also, knowing linear equations.

I hope this helps.

It really should depend on what level of math the student is ready for. When I was in junior high, pre-algebra was offered in 7th grade and Algebra 1 in 8th. But I, myself have always been lacking in my math skills and didn't take pre-algebra until 9th grade. So again, it depends on where the student is standing in his/her math skills.

I am in 8th grade right now. So far we have done order of operations, adding / subtracting / multiplying / dividing fractions, geometry, probability, and we just started graphing. Some kids in my grade are doing algebra.

All you'd ever want to know about math in NY and more!

NY State guide from State Ed.:

It is broken down by grade. Go past the "strands", and it lists each topic.
