Has anyone else had this?

My female betta has a bumb, about the size of a small wart, at the end of her body right where the tail starts. It sticks out on both sides. It's starting to eat at her tail. I treat her, and her tail gets better. But if I stop at all it starts getting worse. The bump got a little bigger, but for the most part it seems to be staying the same size.

Does anyone think it might be a tumor or something? I am very experienced with these fish, but I've never seen anything like this before. How should I deal with it?

I inherited her from my 9 year old cousin a month ago. He kept her in a quart of water for a year. I just put her in a gallon yesterday morning. This is the weird thing, the bumb is now shaped like a half moon and it is a little smaller and smoother. I haven't treated her and her tail much less ratty.
I've owned betta's since I was 6 and I've never seen something this strange before.

That sounds like a fairly advanced fast growing tumor. It may be benign but could also be cancerous. Tumors of either type are practically impossible to treat and euthanasia is the only realistic answer to how to deal with it.

I have seen this type of growth on bettas before and exactly where you describe it, in each case it was a tumor.

Indeed you are correct and really sorry! it happens quite often actually. the breeder that just brought our batch to our petshop had one with a double tail - was pretty neat actually *Wink
