Solve using the quadratic formula.

2) 35x^ + 98x + 40=0

1.) The question makes no sense...

2.) Quadratic formula = (-b +/- ((b^2 - 4ac)^1/2)) / 2a
(-98 +/- ((9604 - 5600)^1/2) / 70
-1.4 +/- (63.277) / 70
-1.4 +/- 0.904
-2.304, -.496

For 3 and 4, when asking questions of these things, use parenthesis to make it clear what's under the radical...
3.) 4√x = √(9x + 9)
Square both sides:
4√x * 4√x = √(9x + 9) * √(9x + 9)
16x = 9x + 9
7x = 9
x = 9/7

4.) √(x + 6) + √(2 - x) = 4

Square both sides:
(x + 6) + 2(√(x + 6)√(2 - x)) + (2 - x) = 16
8 + 2(√(x + 6)√(2 - x)) = 16
2(√(x + 6)√(2 - x)) = 8
(√(x + 6)√(2 - x)) = 4

Simplify:
(√(x + 6)(2 - x)) = 4
(√(2x + 12 - x^2 - 6x)) = 4
(√(- x^2 - 4x + 12)) = 4

Square both sides again:
- x^2 - 4x + 12 = 16
- x^2 - 4x - 4 = 0

Multiply by -1:
x^2 + 4x + 4 = 0
(x + 2)^2 = 0
x + 2 = 0
x = -2 (solution!)

Check:
√(x + 6) + √(2 - x) = 4
√(-2 + 6) + √(2 - -2) = 4
√4 + √4 = 4
2 + 2 = 4 (Check!)
