This happened spontaneously, the thing was working fine before. This is on a 1989 Toyota Celica GT-S. Let me know if any more info is needed?

Yikes! It snapped? Where does that usually occur?

Hi there.

That is a fairly common problem to Toyota's from 85 to about 93.

the Speedometer system in that vehicle uses a "Two Cable & Housing" set up to drive the speedometer.

The first cable runs off the transmission and routes in back of the intake manifold. The Cable gets real hot here and after about ten years time ( or so ) it breaks from lack of lubrication. The second cable rarely goes bad(i have never replaced one).

The first Cable & Housing is sealed and Can't be repaired. It must be replaced with one from the Dealership only. The cost is about $40.00 for the part and maybe $40.00 to install it on your vehicle. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to do the job once the part is in hand.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Have a new speedometer cable assembly installed. That is more likely a dealer item only. It may be around $40 to $60. but you will be better off in the long run to have a new assembly installed.

Your cable snapped. Happens all the time, mostly at high speeds.

Check speedo cable under the hood.

I'd take it to the mechanic. If you get pulled over, it's illegal.
