yes. you shouldn't need a day to tell people how special they are.

No, because I see it as a day meant to give gifts to significant others for the sole reason of defining how much or how deep the relationship is. Ex.
A. Jewelry as a gift says, "I am committed enough to want you to want me more and more."
B. Flowers and candy type gifts says, "I am committed enough to be worried about making you feel like I am not committed."
C. A simple card type gift with something thoughtful handwritten inside says either "I am broke," or what A or B said.
D. A simple card type gift that has nothing handwritten in but the hallmark message says either, "I like you enough to avoid an argument about why I didn't give you any valentine recognition." OR it says, "you are not my girlfriend/boyfriend and don't get any funny ideas," or "I don't want you to get suspicious about who my real girfriend or boyfriend is."

So while that is probably not the reason for the holiday at all it is the reason that drives people to participate. I think that the commercialization of Valentines Day is perfect for giving folks options about what their gift will tell their significant other. If you believe the day is meant to show appreciation for your significant other, than it is the commercialization that keeps the holiday alive.

I'm starting to think everything is. I think we are becoming more and more programed to work and buy and do what ever the media tells us to buy and do. Look this way... drive this car. I live in Orange County California ... it's really bad here. I was born in Savannah, Ga. Things were a lot different in the south. But every year every holiday becomes bigger. When your in love everyday should be like Valentine's Day. I love holidays and I love to buy gifts but I do nice thing for my friends and family all the time... It does not take a holiday for me to get that sweet giving spirit. I try to make the most of everyday.
I think that it's over commercialized and I feel sad for people who are all alone and it makes another holiday sad for them.

It isn't just over-commercialized, it is completely commercial. The need for a gift or service to demonstrate your affection for another created solely by companies for their own profit, that's all this holiday has been reduced to. If you feel the need to have a boyfriend or girlfriend during this time simply because if you don't *gasp* you won't have a valentine given by a lover!Oh no! haha It's funny to watch people get all sad and desparate over nothing, an excuse to indulge in one's own insecurities.

yes, and buying a lot of pre-fabricated valentines just builds on the commercialization of the day. I think people enjoy receiving cards and gifts made from a person, from the heart, rather than a machine... whether it is a card or a cookie

I think the commercials are the wrong kind. It seems like if a guy doesn't get a girl flowers, candy, and jewelry, he should be in serious trouble. and getting gifts isn't what the holiday is about. All the commercials insist that if you love someone you spend money on them, and buy them gifts. But just because someone gets money, or a gift doesn't mean you like them. look at the money we give to the government in taxes!

I think Valentine's Day is just as commercialized as every other holiday.

yes, but we live in a commercialized society anyway. People still love to buy valentine's producs, and we're still happy to receive them. The companies are just smart to use this occasion to make money... as far as i concern, everybody's feeling all loved up and happy. as for the singles, i know it can be frustrating to be single on valentine's day... but it's still in the beginning of the year, you can make the rest of the year to make sure you have somebody to celebrate valentine's with next year.

Ummmm, Valentines Day came about from Greeting Card companies that wanted an extra day between Xmas and Easter to sell products. I really mean that. That's where Valentine's Day comes from.

i for my area experience it really is only too comercialized. it really is a tremendous vacation for Hallmark and creates more desirable agency for them. and then there is the commercials to pass purchase this and that for "your particular someone" and that's all only a gimmick. Valentine's day exists for individuals to inform one yet another how a lot they love one yet another so why is there all this commercialism?
