I would say most NHL fans like only a single team not the sport in general. The one's that like the sport, probably don't like all of the rule changes and watering down of the game. Pure hockey fans might not recognize their sport.

You are absolutely correct. The problem isn't the NHL it's Gary Bettman. What kind of a business man gives the national broadcast contract to the Outdoor Life Network. What makes the contract worse is the NHL was coming out of a lockout. The new NHL is much more exciting and action packed, with only Versus (once in awhile NBC) doing national broadcasts the games can not be shown to new viewers and thus the only people that are watching the games have been fans for awhile.

There are several problems with the NHL and tv. The first is the obvious one very few people have VS its not a major network its not even a major cable network some cable companies do not even carry it and some satelite companies don't even include it in the basic package.

The other factor is the NHL on tv vs the NHL live in person is horrible. Unlike football, baseball or basketball the sport isnt a tv sport. In basketball it is easy to follow the play and follow the ball. Baseball there is a lot of deadtime and if you look away its not the end of the world. In football if you look away you miss a play they have time to replay it 3 times before the next play is run (LOTS OF DOWN TIME). In the NHL however the puck is hard to follow on tv it gets lost in the corners, you loose th black puck when it is pressed against a black stick or skate so you actually have to watch close to follow the game. It becomes almost a chore more so than a passive activity. Hockey in person is amazing hockey on tv ehh not so much.

The NHL is on Versus because Versus paid for the broadcasting rights. ESPN didn't want the NHL anymore, which is a shame. I'd MUCH rather watch an Avs/ Wings game then some big guy pulling a truck with his teeth.

And not everyone gets Versus. I have DirectTV and get it. My parents live down the street and have cable but they don't get it.

I herd allot of Americans don't even get versus, and if they have the centre ice pack allot of games are blocked out. the NHL did have a contract on ESPN just before the lookout and with the lookout ESPN tore up the contract so that's why there's no ESPN covering it. the NHL needs a station like NBC or ABC in the US and make it like Canada's CBC (HNIC). late 80's early 90's NHL was ahead of the NBA and not far from MLB which was falling hard at the time, and after or strike of 94' the league fell apart to expansion and the talent was too spread out and the scoring dropped and that's what hurt this game.

Not every one gets Versus which is the only channel that shows hockey games. If you want to watch hockey you have to get the NHL Center Ice package and not everyone can afford that.
ESPN sucks

I live in Japan and just once I would like to see a recent game rather than these lame month old games off some obscure network. Maybe with the new young stars of the game, and NO PLAYER STRIKES we can have a few good seasons to turn some new viewers onto the sport.

u might be correct because espn would realize the mistake they made. after the lockout they couldnt find anyone to take them. the outdoor life network probably wasnt the first choice of a sport which is played entirely indoors. but espn would probably pick up the NHL if everyone watched the games like they do for the NFL, NBA, and MLB

Well, there are definitely 10-15 mill. if you count Canadians. And frankly, not all of us have Versus so not all "10+ million" fans are gonna be watching.

most hockey fans in general like their team and not the league. there's so much bad blood between some of these teams that they find any reason not to like a team.
