My mother is hassling me that I am too thin. I currently weigh 57 kilos and am 169cms tall, I am 30 years old and this is my first pregnancy. At the begining of 2006 I weighed 67 kilos and have lost this weight over a period of a year, this is simply through a change of lifestyle and not through dieting or the like. I don't drink or smoke, I have a very healthy diet and I have to say it is really frustrating hearing this from her.. ahhh!! My doctor and obstetrician do not seem concerned, but I wondered what other peoples experiences have been like and if there is a weight that is 'better' or not. Any advice? Thank you.

Everybody is different. If your doctor isn't concerned don't worry about it.Some women actually lose weight in their first few months of pregnancy if they have morning sickness.

When you get pregnant, a lower weight means that you are at less risk for certain conditions (gestational diabetes being the major one)--this doesn't mean you can't develop them, but you are at a lower risk. I wouldn't worry about your prepregnancy weight; as long as your doctors are happy with your weight gain (should be 1-3 pounds/4 weeks) you're okay.

You have to be careful of significant weight gain/loss... with my first pregnancy, I gained 13 pounds in one month (after 4 months of only gaining a pound a month) and my doctor was very upset with me. I developed gestational diabetes--as much from the weight gain as my ice cream habit--and was placed on a severe diet through which I lost 6 pounds at the end of my pregnancy. All together, between what I gained and what I lost, I only gained 17 pounds with my first pregnancy.

Listen to your doctor and only your doctor. If they aren't concerned then there is no need for you to be either.

I gained approx. 15 kilos with each pregnancy. I ate healthy and got lots of exercise. My baby's were small (but so am I) & very healthy.
