Death glorifies public figures. JFK would have gone down as a very mediocre president if he hadn't been assassinated. Instead, he's held up as a shining example of what could have been. Not that he wasn't a pretty good guy from what we're told, but he wasn't as great a president as he's made out to be. Same with musicians. I doubt Nirvana would still be popular if Cobain hadn't died.

Well there are living legends like Clint Eastwood, BB King and Elizabeth Taylor, etc. I think anyone who died from any of those things does not make them a living legend.

James Dean, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, etc., if they were alive today they would still be living legends because of their uniqueness.

If you are referring to Anna Nicole, I know a very intelligent male librarian/musician who thinks she was very hot. She had something about her whether some people liked her or not.

Lots of people die in tragic ways and don't become legends, unless there was something special or different about them, unfortunately even just money counts too.

I think that there is just more of a fascination about people's lives sometimes after their death. I think that this is because so much additional information comes out about them and people speak more openly about the person. It's kind of like sometimes we don't realize how good and rare some talent is until the artist is no longer with us.
