The Grimm Brothers were very influenced by the folklore and the mythology from all parts of Germany.
But it was the encompassing, dark and never ending atmosphere of The Black Forrest, that gave them the inspiration for the darkness of their works.

The Grimms brothers actually took the stories from all over Germany. One of the reasons the stories were so popular is that the Grimms brothers copied the stories down in the dialect of the people who told them. So there is no one place that these stories originate from.
