I keep my house very clean. I have a 7 month old baby, so I am religious about vacuuming, cleaning the counter tops, etc. And I STILL have roaches. I have done all the cleaning there is to possibly do. I have tried spray, baits, diatomaceous earth, and Borax, and nothing has worked. I have heard that roaches are attracted to water; is there any truth to this? My house has a cesspool that overflows frequently (not sure if that's relevant?), the sinks do not drain properly and the toilet does not flush properly either. Could this be the source of the problem? I am worried sick about my baby living in this house, but I cannot afford the rent any place else. Any suggestions?

To correctly answer this question, I would have to know what type of cockroach you are dealing with. They all have their little niche they fill. The septic system problem could be part of the problem but not enough information to tell for sure.

Most states have renter's rights laws. If you are renting, the landlord is required by law to provide a safe and healthy environment. You can call your local health department to inquire about your options with the septic system. Also cockroach droppings are believed to cause more allergies and asthma than any other item so the health department should also be on that. Under renter's rights laws, the health department may be able to bring in a pest management company and make the landlord pay for it.

I live in Tx. and they are abundant here. I do not have any in the house but see some of the tree roaches outside in the summer time. The best way to keep them out of the house is to rinse all cans (veg. etc.) If you do not have a garbage disposal, then place all leftovers etc. in a tight container (such as a used mayo jar, a plastic margarine container etc. If there is no food for them they will not come in.

I'm not sure-but that could be part of the problem. Yet, another question--do you have your food in air tight containers? Like Rubbermaid, Tupperware, etc.? That should help. Keep flour, sugar, all that stuff, plus cereal, etc. in air tight containers--maybe those glass jars with the "canning" lid. I have heard of pouring bleach down the drains-but if they are in the pipes, not sure how much all of this is going to help. Could you please consider calling around to different pest control companies in your area? Maybe they would have a helpful suggestion or two. I wish you the best. Take care.

if you rent make the homeowner get rid of them.they are responsible for this and should have the house on a schedule with the local bug man.you might ask your neighbors if they have the same problem this might shed some new light on whether or not it is related to the cesspool.i know water roaches are attracted to the water but if you are like me you can't tell the difference between one another.good luck

You could use boric acid to get rid of them .Mix some sugar and boric acid or Roach Proof which the same thing in lids and put under stoves and under sink.Make sure pets and kids can't get at it.The Roach's are drawn to the sugar and the boric acid gets in their hair and they take it back to their nest and spread it around. They clean it off and the acid eats them up.It's one thing they don't get immune to.Acid is very week and sold in stores for that purpose.
