Sometimes, happened in Gretzky's case one. Guy was on Gretzky's back all night, and one game, Gretzky was skating along his bench, and heard a whistle. Looked back, and that guy was out cold. His teammate that he told stood up, knocked him out with his stick, and yelled "Eject that guy! He threw something!" That is seriously a true story.

Yes this was more common in the early NHL because in the days of 1 ref and no video replay it was easier to take a cheap shot and get away with it. In today's NHL it would be reviewed and even if the refs missed it the coach could ask the NHL to suspend the violating player.

If there's a scrum going on right in front of the bench once in awhile you'll see someone on the bench try to 'sneak' a swipe at someone but if they get caught it's a penalty. But they sure say things to one another in passing.

They chirp for the most part.

It's happened a couple of times, often results in a bench brawl haha.

No this wasn't very common back in the day nor is it very common now. That would make the game more interesting though and there would be about ten times more fights.

As long as the ref wasn't looking, absolutely!
