I'm an Avs fan and I miss that good ole rivalry. Blame it on political correctness (nobody can lose an OT game, they have winners and runners-up. A point for a loss is wrong) and the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Buddy, I'm about a decade older than you and I can assure you that the heyday of hockey has long passed. I'm in agreement with you. I remember as a middle schooler hockey being more exciting. Not only were their teams in Hartford, Quebec and Winnipeg, the league seemed more exciting. The rivalries it seemed were stronger. Reallignment and expansion had occured some years before. The game was more physical and fans weren't afraid of a 3-3 tie after overtime. I don't know who is to blame. I'm an American who grew up with skates on, but I must kinda lay some blame on American fans who seemed to want the league to expand to all corners of the country and gave up on overtime. I remember a Dallas Stars player saying back in the day that he couldn't believe how more refined the Minnesota fans were and how different Texan fans wanted the game to be. That said, market forces have certainly shaped hockey. The NHL has had a lot of trouble making money, too. I hope that the league will contract or move failing teams back into Quebec, Manitoba or Connecticut, but I wont hold my breath. I do think it's good that there are now kids in Florida who will be potential pro-hockey players, and I think that the NHL should be thanked for that. I still miss the old game and my old Islanders!

I to am a die hard Red Wings fan. But heres the thing, the Wings-Avs rivalry isn't that old, so it isn't like it's something that we should blame on the "new NHL" . I was loving watching these two rivals battle it out....but if you are a die hard Wings fan , you should learn to enjoy the rivalries come about and know that there will always be more. I have to mention the out of control hatred that filled the rink everytime the Blackhawks and Wings played for a while. Bowman was coach and this was right after Bob Probert was traded from Detroit to Chicago.....TALK ABOUT MISSING RIVALRIES!!!!

I don't think the NHL sucks, but i also miss some old rivalries and the seemingly more physical play of the past NHL.some reasons for the changes are as follows:
1.Some rivalries vanished because of the reconfiguration(and renaming) of the divisions during the mid 90's..patrick division, norris division ,etc.. some teams found themselves in a new division.
2.they changed the touch-up offside rule wich caused in constant offside whistles that slowed play and lowered the intensity of many games.
3.in the crease rule..
4.expansion (although some new rivalries were formed as a result)
5.Quebec,Winnipeg,Hartford,Minnesota teams found new homes... a few big changes for better or worse.(depends where you live)
6.alot of the old school physical players are no longer around.
Prohbert,Domi,mcsorley,joe kocur, jay wells,dale hunter,ulf.. etc.. etc..(bad spelling here).
there have been so many changes in the last 15 years and a couple lock-outs.I'm sure there will be some great rivalries within the next couple years, but as far as the old rivalries are concerned.. who knows?
who is to blame for the changes? Bettman and the media .

The lock out has nothing to do with the lost rivalry between the Avs and the Wings. It's the players. Claude Lemieux is no longer there. Deadmarsh, Foote. All the hated players are gone. The rivalry just kinda died out.

The new NHL by way of the game is great. Hitting, fighting, scoring, and none of that clutch and grab stuff.
The new NHL schedule....stinks. I'm in Minnesota, and I'd love to see Sidney Crosby play a game or two...instead we have to play Chicago a dozen times.

the new NHL is great.. idk about the wings/avs rivalry but this schedule has generated lots of rivalries.. the ducks and sharks never really were that big of a rivalry until this year.. maybe its just because im lookin at it in a sharks fans perspective but the sharks have gained about 5 rivalries recently. Preds/Ducks/Kings/Oilers/and Red Wings.. not to mention that the rivalry between the stars and sharks has been magnified like 1000 times. i like the new NHL its faster, and more offense oriented

It's like college, even high school level hockey. The clutching and grabbing needed to be addressed but they are over the top about it. I miss the great checking, hitting, and fighting. If it gets any gentler, they could change it's name to The Ice Capades.

i am sick and tired of hearing and seeing the term "the new nhl". ---- no offense to the asker, in fact, i thank you for bringing it out.
the NHL does suck nowadays, it is tantamount to WWE-style ice rasslin'
SCREW Bettman.
How can we get that type of action back ?? -- About the only way, is for someone with a little $$$ to start a new league, put teams in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Hamilton, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Minnesota, and play good old-fashioned Canadian hockey.

you can blame Bettman for "the new nhl" and there really isn't anything we can do to bring "the old nhl" back.
it's a new era, fighting will go back up and rivalrys will come back, especially if we see this instigator penalty actually go away as rumored.
