There are several reasons why women between the ages of puberty and menopause may miss her menstrual period. The most common reason for a missed period is an undiagnosed pregnancy. When a women reports missing her period, the first thing Women's Health Providers do is a pregnancy test.

After pregnancy has been ruled out, other factors such as stress (holidays, final exams, presentations), other illnesses or medication, a change in eating habits, increased exercise, or weight loss/gain will be considered by the Provider. Any of the above changes may cause for a woman to skip a period.

Some oral contraceptives can also cause a woman to skip her period. The estrogen content in these pills is low, which causing the endometrial lining of the uterus to become thin. Over time the menstrual periods will become very light and may even result in a skipped period. Other contraceptives, like Depo-Provera may cause a woman to stop having periods altogether.

It is important to note that in the absence of pregnancy, woman may occasionally miss periods. This is usually normal. If you have missed 2 or more periods in a row, we encourage you to make an appointment with Women's Health.
