1. AVG Anti-virus
www.grisoft.com
2. Spy-bot Search & Destroy
3. Spyware Terminator
4. Spyware Blaster (This will keep your system from getting spyware on it in the first place. It doesn't remove any spyware but acts as a shield against any.) Another software I use in addition to this shield is spyware guard by javacool software.
5. AVG Antispyware is okay it seems to work on only some.
As suggested above the best freeware anti virus program is to run linux and get rid of the problem right from the get go. However depending on your knowledge of computers and such it can either be a nightmare or walk in the park dealing with linux. When running software though under windows for your said purposes, its best to run more than one spyware removal software. There is not one single free spyware remover or even paid software to my knowledge that removes every type of spyware you could get. Therefore its also good practice to use something that will prevent the initial infection specifically Spyware Blaster and this goes with viruses too. As far as antivirus there isn't much out there for freeware, but I highly recommend AVG. Hope this helps.

I can give you few links that deal with antivirus and antispywares. I think you have to select a standard anti virus. I have come across a website that gives a brief study on computer viruses and their removal. It is very useful. Please visit

You may also try to select and install a suitable anti spy ware from the following link to protect the Pc against spyware attacks.
