So I had my first trip to the gyno today, and it was HORRIBLE. I dont want to ever go to that lady again...I am overweight, and I think she talked to me more about that than anything else. But my question is: has anyone ever encountered a bad gyno like this, and had a horrible, embarrasing first trip, and had to switch?

Im sorry you had such a horrible first experience. I my self am overweight and i know where you are coming from because that is how most of my doctors appt. go also. I have found that i am much more comfortable around women doctors because they seem to understand that it is uncomfortable and can be kind of painful sometimes. It takes a few trips to different doctors sometimes to find a good fit for you. Dont get discouraged because these appt are important and at least it is only once a year (hopefully)

I would recommend switching if you're uncomfortable with that gyno. Try going to interview a few and find one that fits you the best. As far as the old argument of male vs. female gynos, I think it just depends on the person. Any doctor worth seeing will allow you an interview, and if a doctor refuses, you don't want to see him or her anyway because chances are that he/she won't listen to a word you have to say when you're there for a checkup.

Yes. My first encounter with a gynecologist was when I was 15, and I had developed a yeast infection. The doctor was more concerned about my sex life though, even though no STD was present. And to make matters worse, she hinted to my mother that I had started having sex. Needless to say, I try my best not to go to the doctor when I'm home from school. The doctors at my school are much more friendly, and they totally respect patients feelings and confidentiality. My suggestion to you is to switch doctors, because they are providing you with a service. If they are not doing their job appropriately and in a manner that makes u feel comfortable, another doctor most certainly will.

This is why you are entitled to a second opinion. Go back to your family doctor and let him/her know precisely what happened. For that matter, unless you have a problem, there is no reason for you to have seen a GYN. A pelvic exam and pap smear is something that any GP can do.

But if you don't tell your GP, then s/he can't know not to refer other patients to that GYN.

The thing is that you really do need to be able to communicate with each and every one of your doctors. If you can't, that alone is reason enough for a change.

She sounds kind of rude. If there are any health issues with your weight, your general doctor should address them. Your gyno should stick to her area of work.... no pun intended.

I've never been to a gyno... I'm terrified of them.

yep..he slapped my thigh and told me to shut up....I was 16, my mother thought I was pregnant, I was a virgin but she wouldn't believe me, because I'd quit having periods. I have polysistic ovary syndrome. ( I didn't have regular periods till I was 40).
So change Dr's, shop like you would for clothes...thats what I do, when I run into some Dr who thinks they're gifts to mankind.
(and I'm over 50 and STILL hate gynecologists)
