always have an emergency kit ready. candles are good, but also get the flashlight that is hand cranked so you dont have to worry about the flames. Also, have a cord phone in the home, not a cordless or cell phone.
make sure that you have water for atleast for 3 days. a radio, hand crank is great, and some canned foods or be adventures and get some of that camping food stuff. first aid kit is good also. AND!! if you have pets, have an emer kit for them also, and food and water for them too.
we also have an emer kit for the car. it not only has emergency stuff for the car but for also humans and pets. we have some blankets in there too.

Light candles, use flashlights. You might want to invest in some lanterns.

There are some things that you can do that does not take lights. However, if you are alone I suggest you find a good bar with a backup emergency generator.
