i took my minivan in for some repairs. it was running pretty rough when sitting at an idle. they said it was from the throttle body need to be cleaned and an additive for the fuel. this van has 25K miles and ive only put 2K on it. would the cleaning help it?

they also said that cold air lowers your mpg. i thought cold air would help it. which one is it?

ok i bought the van in october. i have a check list that says everything was in working order and that all maintenance for anything up to 23K was performed. this also said we had over 50% brakes but they just replaced then cause they were down to less than 10%. so i'm having a hard time believing what they say.

Yes your car could very well need cleaning, expecially if you don't use frequented gas stations or you use the no-name stations. A good practice is to pour a complete fuel system cleaner such as chevron techron or gumout regane into the tank every oil change. Have the shop clean the throttle body, pour in the bottle yourself, you'll same money.

As for the cold air lowering your MPG, I think he means cold temperature. During winter your car takes longer to warm up, resulting in less efficiency. Also we're using winter blended gas right now, which has less power than summer blended gas, which is good for 2-3 mpg less.

The cleaning probably won't hurt. The reason is, the low mileage you've put on it probably hasn't had a chance to clean all the gunk and goo that accumulates. That's why they recommed an additive.

Cold temperatures affect mileage negatively because the car doesn't warm up to operating temperatures quickly. The choke usually doesn't fully release and therefore the engine gets a richer fuel mixture (more gas and less air) for longer periods of time. You're right in generalizing that cool temperature increases mileage, but there is a limit. The term "cooler" is relative; if it's 100° outside and the engine temperature is 180°, a ten degree decrease in outside temperature is beneficial, but when it's 30° and the engine temp is 180°, you probably will experience a decrease in mileage.

Cleaning the throttle body will likely help the rough idle.

A lot of these guys don't know what they're talking about.
Cold air increases horsepower, but decreases gas mileage.

girl you better find a different shop. Cold air is good for h.p. for sure, mpg as well. Just buy a bottle of fuel injector cleaner and pour it in before you put gas in your car again. If need be do it again on your next fill. If it still does it then come back.

i own a repair shop, and i don't think that's whats wrong with it at all, just with 25 k on it,i think all it needs is new spark plugs in it,its about time for them to be changed ,and this will cause it to run real rough but i don't think it needs the throttle body cleaned out on it,this doesn't sound right at all on it,and as for the cold air,,in the winter time the cold air is different from getting cool clean air in the summer, cold weather does make one use a little more gas sometimes, they was partially right on that one,but i think you might need to tell them ,just to put new plugs in it,and maybe change the air filter, and leave it alone, this should take care of the rough running part of it,good luck i hope this help,s.

cold air is not bad for engine its the best cold air has more molecules than hot air which means vehicle will run at an optimal air/fuel ratio 14.7air to 1 part fuel or closes to that number based on theory of operation
