One of the parents at my daughter's school came from America and he is aggressively trying to get the school staff to introduce a child beauty pageant at the primary school so that the children can compete. James is a good friend of mine so I spoke to him. I told him I think making children compete in terms of beauty is horrible. Those children who are not as beautiful will be hurt. James then accused me of being politically correct.

What can I say to this guy to make him realize that a child beauty pageant at school is not a good idea if it isn't?

I am in America and I have never heard of it. Kids here compete in sports, spelling bees, perfect attendance, etc but not that. Does he have children there? Because it seems a rather odd behavior. That kind of stuff is for after school hours. It has nothing to do with education even tho some parents feel it is a good learning experience. If he wants his little darling to attend a school that encourages these activities I'm sure he will find one.

I'm sorry, I'm going to be of no help. I think it's a good idea. The school pageants where we live are always a good fundraiser for the school. However, I can see your point as well.

If it is done well, the children's self-esteem will be enhanced. A way to do this? Give each contestant an award, or give all the children who don't win a smaller crown and trophy and announce them as a "princess." Also, level the playing field and make the attire a church dress or "school girl" wear, no make-up.

You can also give awards for "Best Smile", "Prettiest Eyes", "Prettiest Hair", etc. Be creative.

Good luck.

If anything, child beauty pageants show what Hollywood has been doing for quite some years now, and that being only the good looking will make it any where in life.

Its probably because he was involved in them in the states - so he thinks he can win....tell him that if being politically correct will protect the kids self-esteem, then so be it and find another friend!!
