The inside of the pan where food goes is perfectly fine, but the bottom of the pan that touches the burner has burned! It is a Circulon pan with a stainless steel bottom, and the bottom now has gold streaks where it once was silver. I left some baking soda on the discoloration, but does anyone have any surefire ways to restore the pan? This was my first time using it, its brand new, and I cleaned the pan before I used it. Please help!

Since the inside of your pan is fine, I would wash the outside with a scotch-brite pad and call it good.

I encourage you to visit any restaurant, from truck-stop to 5-star gourmet and take a look at their pans.

They are clean on the inside and well-seasoned on the outside. Stainless pans actually perform better in this condition.

For a really badly burnt pan that looks past redemption, cover the bottom of the pan with about 1-2 inches of Coca-cola and bring to the boil.
As this is boiling gently scrub with a long handled brush.
Repeat as necessary until the pan is sparkling like new

Pour a cup of ammonia into the pan and seal it into a plastic garbage bag. Put it somewhere out of the way for at least three days. The burnt on sauce should come right off. I've taken burnt on grease off broiler pans like this and made them look new with a minimum of scrubbing.

Do not let pans boil dry, or overheat on burner, which causes discoloration. Stainless steel pans on burners do not distribute heat evenly, and foods tend to stick in "hot spots," so careful stirring of foods is important. Pans with a copper bottom, or a "sandwich" layer of aluminum or copper hidden in the bottom overcome this problem.

Wash by hand or in dishwasher. If washed by hand, rinse well, and polish dry at once with soft dish towel to avoid spots and streaks. Dishwasher washing and drying do not leave these spots and streaks; occasionally a bluish cast develops which can be removed with silver polish. Some foods (acidic, salt, milk and milk products) should be washed, or rinsed thoroughly off the surface of stainless steel promptly or else they tend to corrode it. Do not use harsh abrasives or steel wool on stainless steel. Cooked-on food or grease can be removed from stainless steel utensils by using a fine abrasive cleaning powder or a paste of baking soda and water, or a paste of ammonia and rotten stone. Commercial stainless steel cleaner is available.

If you have stainless steel cookware, an easy way to clean stubborn stains (inside or outside) is to sprinkle the stain with cleanser, moisten a paper towel with vinegar and rub the cleanser around with the towel. Then wipe out with soapy water, rinsing good with clean water. Makes your pots shine! (and no more burned on ****!)

Buy some silver tarnish and polish that bottom of the pan. It is easy to do...just read the directions. You could also try a brillo pad or a green scrubby with comet..

Its called soda ash or pot ash. It will clean copper to a new finish. It will take shellac off of rubber gloves. It goes into water and generates some heat but if you add boiling water to the sink you are soaking it in its even better

Try Coca-Cola. It's surprising what it can do to burnt pans. It's also worrying if you see the results, because what's it doing to your stomach?
