My choice would be a dog or cat, but, get them while they are very young. If you choose a dog, I would recommend a Labrador Retriever. They have great temperaments with children and are very smart and loyal. As far as kittens, I would have to say just an ordinary kitten would be nice. A regular DSH (domesticated short hair) kitten would be a perfect pet for your kids. It will also be a good learning experience for them as well. They could learn how to take care of the pet and learn a little responsibility too.By starting off with a kitten or puppy, the pet can grow up with your kids. I wouldn't go with hamsters, mice, etc. It's a lot of work keeping their cages clean. Hope this helped, good luck!

That all depends on the age of the child, how many, how the children act, and what size of pet you want.
Such as you have a couple of kids who run around and rough house all the time, and you wanted to teach them to be more gental, a kitten would be great, or a small dog.
You want the kids to realse more energy, a larger dog would be great, since the dog would not get hurt easily by the kids.
Say you have a child who is gental and calm, but has really bad allergies, something like a hamster would be great.
Or you have a child who is too young to really play with an animal, a fish would be ideal.
Does your child have a favorite animal? If so maybe that animal would be the best pet for him or her.
Just take different factors into chosing the pet, and make sure your child really likes the pet you chose to purchase, if not he/she may lose interast in the pet.
Good luck!

My three daughters 7, 5 and 3 each have a pet. We talked about what they wanted in a pet and then we researched different aspects of owning a particular pet. My three year old has a guinea pig. They are great because they are very laid back yet fun to watch and the kids can pet and handle them. My five year old has a budgie (parakeet). We are parrot people and my husband and I have three of our own. Budgies do take some work and some children are scared of being bit. My oldest daughter recently chose a new pet. After we talked about everything from snakes, iguanas, rabbits, hamsters, etc. and the cleaning and feeding of each she decided on a small 5 gallon aquarium with some guppies and a snail. She has previously owned a budgie, but after it died she decided she wanted a pet that didn't take as much time and that she didn't have to clean up after. A long answer to say - it depends on the child and what they want and what responsibilities they want to take on.

Kids usually love puppies, but many places do not allow you to keep a dog or many people can not properly take care of a dog simply because they dont have the time or patience.
If that is the case it is no big deal, A good idea is something small like a hampster or gerbil. The kids can play with them in a plastic ball so they dont leave a mess and they are realatively mess free when it comes to cages.
Guinea Pigs are not a good choice because they are harder to play with. Their backbone is not made to bend in a wheel and they get large and hard for small children to keep a handle on.

I myself always had and loved big dogs. But I didn't want to have that much responsibilities w/a puppy. I hated cats all my life.my daughter seen some kittys for free and begged so we said yes cuz they are much easier to take care of than a dog. Well we ended up 2wks later getting another kitty. They are 8 mths old now and I couldn't imagine our lives w/out them. They show so much love and the kids love to cuddle and play w/them.

ultimately a dog. if you dont' want to go with a dog get a small group (3 or so) of same sex guinea pigs. they are kind of boring alone but like being in groups a lot. they converse with each other and have pig choruses and do this popcorn thing where they flip on their back legs. its like having a different pet when they are in small groups.

First easy pet...Goldfish
Second easy pet...Guinea Pig
Third easy pet...Hamster/rodent
Fourth easy pet...Parakeet (that doesn't talk)
I would start off with one of these pets then when your child becomes more pet caring try a Chihuahua!!!!
Good luck!!!

A dog, but NOT a puppy. They require alot of training, and discipline. We just got a 3 yr old Beagle, and he is absolutely WONDERFUL with the entire family!!!!!!!!!

Growing up I had hampsters. They are easy to care for and they can easily be carried. The only problem is that they can get out.
