Many changes including the rise and collapse of Charlemagne, feudalism and its collapse, barbarian invasions, the crusades, reformations and many wars. For prosperity: the renaissance broke the shackles of papal and spiritual bondage, declassified usury and banking as sin etc. Expanded economy beyond basic subsistence into arts. Where the Italian renaissance was humanistic, the German variant was technological-leading to the discovery of the printing press and the growth of publishing. The voyages of discovery marked the expansion of Europe and the beginings of European appropriation of global resources etc.

The Middle ages don't exist. History is a continuous thread. Is the "Renaissance" any less disordered, What about the Late Roman? The only thing you can say is that the official scale of disorder went up because the size of the political units got larger. Larger armies. However we see prosperity brought on by the need for supplies for these armies, and the technical know how to produce war materials driving the technologies to produce them.

1400 +years in a hundred different places, makes this tough to wrap around those questions. Look only at the achievements in architecture and see prosperity. Examine the changes in society in Europe following the visitation of the plague and see disorder.

the middle ages was sometimes called the dark ages because there is very little cultural achievements worth noting. However, Christianity did grow through missonaries. There was also the feudal system that was very orderly. The only thing i could think of was how cruel the punishments were if you did something bad--the feudal justice system and that since lords had much time on their hands their would be stupid fights called jousts and other "entertainment" like that. Hope this helps some. I just did the middle ages in my history class and had a test today. ;)
