I mean really, this is a non issue almost everywhere else in the modern world. Why do Americans obsess over this issue?

People are too close-minded. Too many ignorant people are afraid of it, because they don't understand it. They don't want to accept that it's nature, not nurture. They think you turn people "straight."

Banning gay marriage is ignorant, but it stems from the fact that people think marriage has something to do with religion. In reality, the ability to marry two people is a governmental right that they allowed religious leaders to perform. All marriages are essentially civil unions, people sign their marriage certificates before the ceremony. The ceremony, is the part specific to religious or non-religious ceremonies.

A solution to this problem is for all marriages to actually become civil unions. Homosexuals should be allowed this same right to partake in civil unions. Ceremonies can still be performed, but like now, they do not actually finalize the process.

Lastly, I'm sick of all these homophobic people spewing their garbage about homosexuality being immoral and a sin. It's not a choice, therefore cannot be changed, so deal with it.

Because if allowed it sends a confusing message to the next generation that allows for more acceptance of the lifestyle.

I feel its a deviant LEARNED behavior that no one is born with, and the last thing I would want is my children to think its okay to marry another boy or another girl as so young an age, especially when circumstances caused people that way.
And the newer generations only see the final outcome.

Specifying.
A person becomes gay for several reasons, abuse by family, abuse by partner, rejection by opposite sex, confusion about ones own sexuallity caused by the above three situations.

Thats what caused the behavior initially.
But now what its manifested into is people seeing the lifestyle, and wanting to try it out -- just for the sake of trying it out with no true appreciation or understanding for the reasons the initial people began it with,

I have ex girlfriends who were gay, and Ive known males who were gay, including family. And for each one of them in talking to them it was in fact one of the above stated reasons for their homosexuality.

But now, I see an entire group of people just wanting to experiement with the lifestyle.
Well, its lost all its meaning.

I can see how its progressed. Gay people of a generation ago merely wanted freedom from persecution. They wanted their own identity, and rightfully so. But this new generation has taken it to a completely different level where its now widely acceptable way of life.

The moment we allow gay marriages is the moment we confuse our new generation into something they should not be exposed to at early ages.
When they are young adults they should be made aware why people resort to that lifestyle -- just like why people take drugs.
Its a learned behavior -- nomatter how many quakc scientists try to say theirs a gay DNA gene.

So, Im all for respecting every other person, and their right to be treated respectuflly, but I also dont want my children exposed to a lifestyleat so young an age where they grow up thinking it would be cool to date people of the same sex in their teens.

and thats the exact message we would send if gay marriages were allowed

I guess I'm obsessed about it because I don't think it's fair that my fellow citizens do not get to enjoy the same rights that I do. So until that day comes, I'll keep wondering why they aren't allowed to be married to the one they love. It's a civil rights issue, and I support civil rights for all people.

Your premise is incorrect. America is not obsessed with gay marriage. Gays are obsessed with legalizing the concept and keep promoting it. This is why we hear so much about it. But if a powerful lobby like the various gay and lesbian lobby groups keep pushing for it, it forces others to take a position. Vigorous debate is the American way.

I think its a combination of radical gay activists trying to normalize their deviant lifestyle at the expense of traditional family values, and the religious right using it as a wedge issue to run candidates on. Plus, the media likes to constantly throw fuel on the fire to drive up ratings.

I don't know but I feel a person has a right to choose who they want marry man or woman. Ask Cheney he'll say well not counting my pregnant daughter Mary and her partner, I'm fully against it all but just them two. Hypocrisy is one of Republican 's main traits.

Because the divorce rate in America is so high. They use gay marriage as a red herring to take the debate off the topic of why so many marriages in America fail.

Don't obsess about it at all. Wouldn't even think about it if people didn't continually bring it up. But that's just me...

Most of us don't. I don't care 1 way or the other, as long as laws are made by legislators, not judges.
